  • Is Bacon Ok?

Is it ok to eat bacon during the Induction Phase? It is listed on the Atkins website on the acceptable foods list but there is an asterisk stating to be careful of bacon cured in sugar. I checked the labels of every brand of bacon in the grocery store and they all have sugar listed as an ingredient, but also have 0 carbs per serving (2-3 slices). Is it ok to eat something that has sugar listed as an ingredient but doesn't have any carbs?

    Re: Is Bacon Ok?

The FDA allows a serving containing .49 or less g carbs to be labeled as having 0 carbs. so chances are, since sugar IS PURE carb, that 2 serving should be counted as 1g.

I loooove bacon, but try to limit it to 1/2 lb or less/wk.

Susan knows how to do this a lot better than me, but to be honest, I eat more bacon than that and it has never stalled me. I try to keep some around for "emergencies".

Shannon, so do I.. I looooove bacon! Never gives me trouble either.

I pulled that 1/2 lb suggestion out of a hat to give a little consideration to Dr A's warning about the nitrates/nitrites which are also used in curing the bacon. If you are worried about their chemical hazards, you should limit them.

(Of course, if that's the case, you probably should also limit swimming in chlorinated pools, eating grilled meat, and breathing while driving behind a bus! )

You have to recognize for yourself about how you react to certain foods. Bacon is simply one of my staples (from bits to strips), and it is certainly Induction friendly. About the nitrates, I have never been convinced about the carcinogenic effects of them, and the stuff without nitrates doesn't look or taste nearly as good. (Nitrates help set the color of the bacon.)
