  • Rules Of induction

I have been kind of at loss for when to eat and see some old timers *smiles* and new ppl saying eat when your hungry or when the 6 hour mark is... but don't eat just to eat. But I've always had the problem like I know so many others have that I never know when to eat.

So I am reading over the induction part of the book and I'm glad to know.

    1) Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go 6 waking hours with-out eating.

    6) Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied but not stuffed. When not hungry eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack.

    To me this says alot.
It truly is what keeps ppl from binging. I think at the beginning of any diet when skipping a meal it can cause a binge. I know from past times. You shouldn't go for so long until your starving. I for my own needs like to schedule times to eat or set certain amounts of meals up for a day... whether I decide to eat 3 meals a day or 4-5 smaller ones... Sometimes I mix that up. But it keeps me from binging. Or feeling hungry.

Honestly I feel hungry now and it's just because I've been trying to wait for hunger to eat. But now I can't stay not hungry for more then 3 hrs because my body is just confused or maybe I need to add a little more higher intake as a few ppl stated. Because I was eating a couple hotdogs a day. But now eating more eggs then hot dogs.

    Anyway I rambled lol...

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

    Take care all!!!

not quite sure i understand what you are trying to say there, jellybee. if you're hungry, then eat something. it doesn't have to be a meal. a legal snack might be all you need.

in between your meals, if you just feel like crunching on something or you just want to nibble on something, then chomp on something legal until your lunch time or dinner time.

i don't know if that helps you any or not. i'm not quite sure i understand what you want to know.

i can't hold much any more. i eat my breakfast when i'm ready for it and then 4 or 5 hours later i seem to just want some slices of pepperoni, some cheese or some nuts and a bit of raw carrots or cauliflower w/mayo. it's more of a snack than anything but it fills me up. then supper is a regular meal but not near the portions i use to eat. supper last night, for me, was 1/2 spaghetti squash w/butter.

IF your truly hungry then eat. Be careful not to confuse thirst with hunger. Have some water and wait a bit to make sure it is really hunger. There is nothing wrong with eating more frequently. Think of your body/metabolism as a furnace. Feed your metabloism to keep it going!

        Re: Rules Of induction

doing Atkins correctly you will get from the high amount of fats in the eating and burning your body fat appetite suppression. if you are still hungry every 3 hours you are doing something wrong.

first are you truely hungry or are you thirsty as Bren said the comtrol centers for both are located in the same area of the brain and spillover does occur. drink a glass of water and see if in 20 min your hunger is gone if so you were thristy. if you are still hungry then eat but stop as soon as your hunger is satisfied even if you got food on the plate.

then examine what you are eating for a triggerring food and believe me triggering foods can be legal foods too. for me celery is a trigger, splenda is also a trigger for me. For some folk it is too much protein and even others are triggered by nuts.
Once you realize what food you are having that is triggering your blood sugar spike and/or insulin spike causing you to feel hunger you can eliminate it.
Also check and make sure you are eating enough fat at your meals it doesn't take large amounts like cups but it is important to be sure you are getting 65% of the cals each time you eat from fat. a boneless chicken breast without a fat would be too much protein and not enough fat and would cause a blood sugar spike triggerring
        hunger feelings.

I know you were hunger free eating your hotdogs you said which were high fat so you do know what the appetite suppression feeling is.

good luck figuring out what is your current trigger

when I want to eat (and this is how I have done this entire thing) ..I make a plate of food ..sit down and eat...no snacks ...it has to be on a plate and I have to be sitting down facing it ...I pay attention and eat until I am content and not full ....this is an skill I had to ..and keep having to learn ...was not natural that is for sure ....or I would not have gained wt in the first place!!!

btw I am not perfect and still have lapses in eating judgement that is for sure

I too am having to learn when to eat. I truely didn't remember what being hungry felt like. I just always ate...well just to eat something. Usually out of boredom. Today I woke up, wasnt hungry and so didnt have breakfast right away. At 1:30 in the afternoon I decided I better just eat anyway even if Im not hungry so I had a salad. Going to a cookout in a few hours and I know there will be lots of yummy meats so im looking forward to that

Definately still having to learn though when to eat. Isnt that weird when ya think about it?? That we have gotten so backwards with food, misusing it and all, that we dont know when, how and what to eat anymore nowdays?

              Re: Rules Of induction

I think there are a lot of people that fall into the category of indulgence and emotional eating. I ate when I was hungry, I ate when I was happy, I ate when I was sad, I ate when I was bored, I ate when I didn't know what I was feeling.....the fact is that I just ate.

On the other hand, I had times where I would go for two to three days without eating and then tank up for a day and then go without food for days again.

I don't ever remember feeling hunger pains or feeling too full. I think my way of eating just caused my body to not be able to function like a normal body should.

I went on a medically supervised liquid diet and got down to 185 lbs. The problem with this diet is that you get five shakes a day and each shake is 100 calories and you don't get to eat any food at all.

The basic fault with this diet is that what human being can come off this diet and have 500 or less calories a day (which is what you need to maintain the weight) eating normal foods. You can't, so the majority of people that I went through this program with gained all the weight and more back when they stopped the diet and went back to real food.

The great thing about Atkins is that it's not a diet. You don't deprive your body of anything that it needs. You eat regular foods and several times a day. You learn the rythm of your own body. This woe isn't just a quick fix, it's something you can live a normal life doing. It's not punishing yourself for your bad eating habits or depriving yourself of something you really want which is how most people feel on a diet. It's like you didn't take care of your body so you're being punished by not being allowed to have a piece of cake, you are made to feel ashamed of yourself and your body but Atkins changes all that. It allows you to have a healthy relationship with food and with yourself.

              Isn't Atkins wonderful!!!!

prfctlildvl I think you might of sumed up what I was really trying to say. I feel good knowing that I'm eating healthier but don't have to worry about weight gain after. That in the long run if I feel the need to eat a little more one day then the other I don't have to beat myself up over it. Makes you realise how amazing this way of life can really be.

Also I just don't agree with skipping meals... if your up 16-18 hrs a day you should be feeding your body. Whether it's a small snack or small to regular size meal. I think you shouldn't wait until your starving. I know from the past how starving feels and I don't like it. Makes me feel weak.

So I guess for now that's how I feel. I do feel as if I get full easier. Which I am starting to be able to tell. Because I take time eating my food at a very slow pace.

Thanks guys sorry about the confusion think it was more of a ramble then anything. Just to remind myself a few things.

Mothercooter- Good job on eating that salad.. If I don't eat breakfast lol by lunch I'm going banana's. My body seems to want food now more then before but I don't mind because I feel so alive and good. So I feed it when I'm hungry. ANYWAY eating a salad before a cookout was probably the best thing to do. Hope you had fun.

Yes relearning food and hunger is something I am still having to do each day. But I think I'm getting better with it. And feeling more proud.

                  Re: Rules Of induction

Im obviously still trying to figure all these things out. We learned to eat one way, and now need to relearn everything. After many years of living a certain way, its hard to turn back so quickly. It may take time, but one day well all get there. Eating when your hungry is key to the program, waiting to long could cause overeating.
