  • Book Version...Which do you prefer?

I just ordered Dr Atkins Diet Revolution from 1981, I was looking for the '72 version but couldn't find it, does anyone know what the differences are, I know the '72 plan is supposed to be really simple and clean....

I go by the 2002 version. Much like everyone else on this board.

I own a couple versions of the book, the '72 version and the 2002 version.

I can't speak for the '81 version, but I do know that the '72 version is highly different from what most of us follow. It's pretty much induction and that's it. If you're planning on moving up the rungs it's really necessary to pick up the 2002 version so you can get the full impact of what all the phases are.

Hey 1Pound, I see from your signature that your in induction, have you been on extended induction the whole time? I kinda think I will do that until I'm within 15 or so lbs of goal..I just have so far to go I want to keep it moving as fast as possible....

Nope, I've moved up the rungs as far as the berry rung, but went back down temporarily because I was having issues controlling my intake. I'm actually planning on moving from induction in the next couple of days. I lost steadily on OWL, between 2-5 pounds a week, so that wasn't a factor in going back to induction.

actually if you have a 81 printing you have the 72 book cause there are only 3 version a 72, 92 and 2002 each was changed slightly as Dr Atkins learned about the problems folk were having and as science made new discoveries about the chemical make up of the human body and foods. It is far healtheir and easier to do the 2002 version for life then the 72 version because Dr Atkins didn't explain very well about how adding back foods could cause blood sugar issues if the food was higher glycemic then the foods you were currently eating and that is what OWL is all about.

Carbkicker, the 2002 version can be bought really cheaply now. For as little as $.01 on Amazon (see link right at the bottom of the page).

Re: Book Version...Which do you prefer?

I had a professor who did atkins in the 80s and we were comparing how it's changed. He said his plan was VERY strict, and didn't allow for the variety of foods that it does now. He lost a ton of weight, but went off it because it didn't allow him to eat much variety...and when he made the mistake of having a wheat roll or something, he was ill for 3 or 4 days, with sweats, fever, hives, etc. Anyway, I think he might have been doing the '71 verson.

Re: Book Version...Which do you prefer?

I definitely prefer the most recent book. I had the book that was, as Christine described, all induction. Although I don't still have a copy of the older book, I don't remember if it allowed veggies. I ate all meats/fats for a year and it really messed up my body chemistry.

Re: Book Version...Which do you prefer?

I have the original from '72. It was my mom's from "back in the day". I found it in my collection and read it, which prompted me to find this site and thus the 2002 version. The original only allowed 2 cups of lettuce a day. It was pretty strict. I don't know how long I would have stayed on that plan, but fortunately, I found you guys and DANDR 2002. Yay!

guess I will read the 80's version and then go out and get (again) the dandr version, I had that one before but have since misplaced it over the last few years...
