  • re-starting inductions and have a few questions about cheese and cups!!!

    Hi Everyone,

I re-started Atkins induction on Monday - I appeared to have lost my DANDR and went to the bookstore, where they had sold out! So I got a different copy of the diet book, called 'Atkins Made Easy - the first 2 weeks' its published by Atkins Health and Medical Information Services, I just have some questions, as from memory (mine is unreliable) I was under the impression that on induction one could eat freeling from cheese, as long as carbs were counted, and also cream, as long as carbs were counted.

The book I have says to limit cream to 2 - 4 onces and cheese to 3 - 4 ounces a day, was this the same in DANDR?

Also, what exactly constitutes a 'cup' or salad/ veggies etc - I think that is an American measurement, and I am not familiar with the amount it means, could some please advise me in grams?

    Thanks, and wish me luck!

grams and cups are not going to match as grams are a weight unit and cups are a volume unit. a cup of lettuce will not weigh the sam as a cup of pumpkin.
we ahve a site in the US http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ that you can pick the cups measure of some food and it will also tell you the grams of the food too if you want to try that. Also a UK pint is bigger then a US pint so don't use the 2 cups is one pint method either.

in 2002 Dr Atkins came out with the version of the book we used it was based on his 30+ yrs experience in dealing with folk attempting to follow his plan and he laid down some rules no more the 4 ounces ofr cheese and count each gram as one carb even though cheddar really has like ,2 carbs per ounce with an amercian weight ounce ( not to be confused with the volume ounces) being about 28grams.
he also limited cream during induction and estabilshed the veggies that must be eatten during induction.

we have copies of those rules and lists in our FAQ and in the induction forums for you to read.

      Thanks, thats helpful,

I am still confused about what constitutes a cup or something - could you give an example, what does a 'cup' mean in the US?

Hi Sabina! Love your name, by the way!

A good way to visualize a cup is to cup your hands together, like you're gathering water to splash on your face. That space is a good approximation of one cup.

Also, on the cheese and cream, like 2big says, it is not an unlimited amount. A lot of folks on ADBB have found that over 3 or 4 ozs of cheese can create a stall. Same for cream. As for what is an ounce of cheese, I don't know if you have string cheese or cheese sticks in the UK, but they are usually in 1 oz sizes.

You might want to buy a food scale as well. They really come in handy for portion control.

        Good luck, my dear!

1 cup is 8 fluid ounces. In the US, we use volume measurements and dry weight measurements.

Volume measure does not equal dry weight measure. So 8 fluid ounces is not the same as 8 ounces. (very common mistake people make, by the way)

A measuring cup in the US is, I think, called a measuring jug in the UK.

The USDA website link 2Big gave you gives the cup measures and their gram weight equivalents. So if you weigh your foods, you'll be able to weigh out the "1 cup" amount.

Re: re-starting inductions and have a few questions about cheese and cups!!!

As not2late and 2big4mysize said, the 'cup' measures 8 US fluid ounces, which is 8.326 UK fluid ounces or about 237 mls.

Most big supermarket chains in the UK as well as independent cook shops sell US cup measures if you want to use them.

Otherwise you can use a measuring jug and fill to the 237 mls mark to see how much a 'cup' will hold and then weigh it to be able to know in the future (if you prefer to use scales for cooking!) for foods not mentioned on the USDA database.

You will find that a cup of shredded lettuce weighs much less than a cup of broccolli or tomatoes, but it doesnt take too long to get used to 'eyeballing' them.

BTW if you go to the USDA database site you can download a pdf file with the info to use when not online.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I haven't posted in here in a while but as a super lurker it's nice to be able to answer a question

I have the 2002 edition of DANDR reprinted in the UK in 2003.

You can have 90 -110 grams of cheese, one ounce of sour cream or or 3 ounces of unsweetened whipping cream, 230 - 340 grams of the salad veggies 140 - 200 grams of the other veggies if your salad does not exceed 230 grams.

              Good luck!

                Thanks for posting that Bumblebea

The cheese and cream amounts are correct but unfortunately when they printed that edition someone in UK made a mistake and instead of talking about 'cups' chose to interpret the American fluid ounce equivalent of cups into UK weight ounces - which are totally different things!

So we still need to go by the cups of veggies (measuring 237 mls per cup), not those incorrect weight measurements for induction.

I don't know about other veggies, but 2 cups of salad greens are equivalent to 85 grams. Sorry I can't help more than that.
