  • question about the 20 carbs

Hi everyone, ok i have done atkins before but not to correctly, this time around im doing it by the book but im confused, it says to eat 20net carbs a day, well when i posted my menu i had a response and basically said i went over in my cups a day but my question is as long as you dont go over 20 you are doing good is what i thought, do you really want to get less than 20, 5 of those carbs were from eggs, coffee, splenda so i had 15 of veggies and i had more than 3 cups of veggies, i actually made a salad and used two cups of romaine lettuce, i topped it with cucumbers, and 4 little cherry tomatoes with some blue cheese dressing and for dinner i had a cup of roasted green beans so all together that was more like 4 cups of veggies but i had only 20 net carbs on fitday with my carbs being at 4%. Any suggestions would be welcomed!!!
Also i need to know calorie wise because im at 285 and also was said that i need to lower my calories and eat less i had 2013, and i feel fine with what i ate not stuffed but just right. if you want you can see my menu for today in the menu section.

Re: question about the 20 carbs

20 net carbs is the maximum amount you can eat daily.

The majority of your carbs should be from your vegetables.

Some of us make a big deal out of measuring the vegetable amounts and being sure not to exceed them during Induction, because this is a way of gettign used to portion size and portion control. The USDA says 1 serving of vegetable is 1 cup raw or 1/2 cooked. Many of us are used to eating those restaurant-style salads that easily contain 4-5 cups of raw vegetation.

Just remember, Induction is a minimum of 14 days. If you are a vegetable lover, on Day 15 you can move to the On-Going Weight Loss Phase and add an additional 5 net carbs of those Induction vegetables to your daily menu.

Re: question about the 20 carbs

As to calories, on Atkins we dont really bother about counting calories but concentrate in induction on carbs.
If you eat when you are hungry and until you are no longer hungry and only from the allowed foods list then you will find some days you seem to eat a lot and others you will only eat a little.

This is normal - as you get to learn to listen to your body you will recognise its signals and feed it the amount of food it needs for your daily activity requirements.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: question about the 20 carbs

If you are at 20 net carbs, you're doing pretty good. When I did induction, I was lucky to get 12-15 net carbs.

as the others said, if you are a veggie lover, once your 14 days are up, go ahead and move into Ongoing Weight Loss "rung" 1 where you add in another 5 net grams of vegetable carbs. In my example, that would have taken me to 17-20 net carbs in a day.

Your menu in your original post looks good to me.

Re: question about the 20 carbs

I agree with Joy--during induction, I measured servings carefully and was usually below 20 carbs. Since OWL, I've finally gotten up to 20 carbs, and now on the dairy rung, I'm usually a couple over 20, between 20-25. But as long as you're limiting yourself to 20, and the majority of the count is from veggies, I think you'll be fine.

Re: question about the 20 carbs

HI thankyou for the response and yes i love veggies, if i was to eat below the 20 carbs a day i think i would not be eating nothing but meat, i try to have veggies at least at lunch and dinner, i have looked over menus here and see a lot that maybe eat veggies once a day, the last time i did atkins i never really did induction correctly but i was trying to eat clean, not really gold standard but i tweaked a lot but i could still lose with 40 net carbs a day, mostly from veggies, i just had a hard time sticking to it, more like i let life events get in my way and this time around i wanted to do it by the book.

Oh, well then....just do your 2 weeks of induction and then move right into the veggies rung. IMO no one ever got fat eating veggies. I *LOVE* veggies and eat lots of them.

I have also been scratching my head over this questions, how to fit 15 carbs of veggies in 3 cups?

Usually for dinner I have 2 cups spring salad (different kinds of lettuce) and a tomato, which only puts me at around 10 carbs. (salad 4, tomato 6) throw some chicken, parmesaun and a tablespoon of dressing and it's dinner.

Re: question about the 20 carbs

Kittie, in that case it's really about choosing veggies with the highest carb count. For instance, instead of iceberg choose romaine, or instead of romaine choose radiccio or something with a higher carb count. Most of the time the ones with the higher carb count also have the higher nutrient and fiber count.

You want to get the most bang for your buck. There are many more veggies on the "salad" list than lettuce. For instance, jicama. I *LOVE* this veggie. I can peel it and eat it like an apple. It has lots of fiber and vitamin C, and 195 mg of potassium.

Sweet red pepper is considered a "salad" veggie. One cup of that has 7 net carbs, 170% of our daily Vitamin A, 472% of our daily Vitamin C, and 263 mg of potassium.

Celery is also considered a salad veggie. One cup of that has 2 net carbs, a whopping 344 mg of potassium.

So, look for vegetables in both the salad category and the other category that will get you the most bang for your buck.

oh I am glad to see somebody else peelsand eats jicam as a veggie.

Kittymama it is about portion size too cut your salad down in size since you need to spread those carbs to all meals eaually. have one cup of vegies at a meal during induction and in OWl you can add lots more duirn the very first rung with 5 more net carbs of veggies.

remember too it is 20 net carbs from all sources that means eggs drinks if youhave them sweeteners, cheese, salad dressings herbs spices cream andother speical catagory foods if you eat them. all carby foods eating my=ust be under 20 net carbs

Re: question about the 20 carbs

Well I know for me i love my veggies and my favorite way to eat them is roasted, now i know there are a lot of good recipes out there, but i have a problem with cheese, i found that out last time i did atkins and could not lose and felt bloated i had to give that up and processed meat which i have not gave that up i eat 2 turkey sausage's in the morning, but i think cheese was the culprit. I must be doing something right lol i have been doing sb for a little over a month when i decided to come back to atkins, i just cant handle all those carbs even in whole foods i only lost 5lbs that would keep coming back if i ate something with a little more carbs, but i have been on induction and have lost 5lbs in three days, which i know i was bloated probally from the whole grains so i know its water weight but thats great i have been miserable with all that bloatness. AS far as the recipes go that i found i love, for the most part they have cream cheese in them so im trying to not go there, and plus i over do it when i have a creamy dish.

I love roasted vegies with just a coating of olive oil. I'm not a veggies with sauces person

when you get to the fresh dairy you may need to skip that and when you get to rung 9 you can see if it is oe type of grain as not2late did. wheat triggers her asthma.
