  • How long should you stay on the induction?

Hey all! I'm new to Atkins and just wanted to know how long you should stay on the Induction phase and approx how much weight should I expect to loose? Thanks again to all.

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

Hi Natassia. Induction is a minimum of 2 weeks. Dr. Atkins says in the book that you can stay on induction longer if you have a lot of weight to lose, or if you are metabolically resistant to weight loss.

The way you tell if you are metabolically resistant is you do induction for 2 weeks (that's a measly 14 days) and see how much you lose. In the book, there are charts for deciding whether you have high/medium/low metabolic resistance. Most people fall in medium and low. However, if you are in the high range, staying on induction longer might help.

Now, with that said...I encourage everyone to move into the ongoing weight loss phase immediately after the first two weeks. Why?
    1) Many people experience a "hesistation" for a couple weeks after the first two. They don't lose, may even experience a gain. You might as well go ahead and move up to having more veggies. Nobody I know has gotten fat eating vegetables.
    2) You'll have more variety. Variety in the form of taste, smell, texture, color of your foods. This will make you more satisfied and able to stay on plan and reach your goals.
    3) New York Style Ricotta Cheesecake.
    4) many people have found that actually adding more foods back in keeps their metabolism going and losing weight.

Hope this helps and welcome to ADBB

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

      Hi Natassia

Joy (Validrouge) has given you some great advice there, but I just wanted to add that on average you can expect to lose between 5% and 10% of the total amount you hope to lose on a 14-day 'by the book' induction.so for someone hoping to lose 100 pounds a loss of 5-10 pounds would be 'normal' - any larger than that would be above average!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

Oh, and I find it a fascinating read. I'm more of a murder mystery or romance junkie, but Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR for short) is one I read over and over.

The science of how it works and why it works is a real eye opener.

I take it Barnes & Noble will have that one...since it seems to be so popular.

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

Atkins is a four phase diet. Each phase is specifically designed to help you lose the weight and keep it off too. According to Dr. Atkins only people who have a severe metabolic resistance to weight loss may benefit from remaining on Induction in order to correct the causes of the resistance. Furthermore on a ver small percentage of us are that metabolically resistant and need to remain at Induction level carbs in order to lose weight.

Sure, you’ll have some people chime in and tell you "But I lost all my weight just doing Induction. There’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. Dr. Atkins was an idiot who didn’t know about his own diet. So do it my way and you’ll have the same, exact results that I did. By the way, if you don’t believe me, check out my thread in the Second Time Around forum. I go through exactly how I did Atkins and lost all my weight. I’m only back here because I slipped alittle and regained everything. But, you can be my weight loss buddy. Remember, I know what I’m doing!"

If you’re going to commit your time, effort and money into a weight loss program, it’s a wasted effort if you’ll regain the weight because you took short-cuts and didn’t make the effort to learn about your body and how to eat for your body, imo.

I also recommend moving on to OWL when you are finished induction, having the variety is wonderful and really helps with boredom, Moving onto OWL also broke a 2 month stall for me.

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

Hi there - Everyone has given GREAT advice to you! I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents... I lost more weight moving onto OWL than while in induction. Induction is a great starting point, and refreshing point (what I'm doing now), but it isn't the lifestyle. And this isn't a diet! It is definitely a lifestyle!

Best of luck - remember, use this board!

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

I am one of those heavyweight losers that did Induction for a long while (1 year of the 15 months weight loss time). To some extent how long you spend on Induction is a personal decision based upon your own metabolic resistance as Megs said and your personal tastes. The point of Induction is to get your eating under control that only foods you allow into your mouth goes in there. once you get that under control and need the variety, by all means start progressing through the rungs of OWL and figure out your CCLL.

Re: How long should you stay on the induction?

My first time around, I stayed on induction until I reached goal, but I was so focused on goal that I did not address what would happen after that. I ended up gaining the weight back and more. I strongly recommend (no, I beg you) go by the book! Buy the book, too! Carry it with you everywhere. Even after you have read, read it again. This has to be a lifestyle change. You can never go "off" this diet. You can only move through the rungs...

                            1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
                            rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                            rung 4 - berries, melon
                            rung 5 - wine -
                            rung 6 - beans, hummus
                            rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
