I have to tell you all that I have been on Atkins many many times throughout the years. I always lose weight while doing it and have developed my own way of using it. I am not only healthy but I have also maintained my weight for over a year now and I always drink diet coke. I think the most important thing is to listen to your body. Everyone is an individual and what works for you may not work for someone else. Having a diet coke here & there is not going to kill you and certainly will not stall your whole induction as long as your not eating more carbs than your supposed to be. THat is not to say water is not healthier but sometimes water just doesn't cut it and no diet will work if you feel totaly deprived. Not everyone that does Atkins is looking to change the way they eat forever and ever. Such as myself I do a modified version and it works wonderfuly. So newbies don't be so overwhelmed that you sabotage your whole effort. A diet coke a day won't ruin your induction!

Diet sodas are a your mileage might vary type of thing. We have had members in the past whose weight loss picked up after ditching the diet soda. We've had diabetic members who have measured the effect of Splenda and Nutrasweet on their blood sugar. Along the same lines, Dr. Atkins wrote in the 1992 version of his diet that some of his patients experienced improved weight loss once they removed artificial sweeteners from their diet. Hence the 3 per day rule. So, it vastly varies from person to person, not only in Dr. ATkins' experience, but also from what has been posted here by other members.
It also goes back to what you find personally acceptable. If you decide it's okay to risk a slower weight loss in order to drink diet soda, then that's up to you. Likewise, if you decide that you don't want that risk, that's up to you too.
The bottomline is that you have to make decisions for yourself about how you would like your diet journey to proceed. Dr. Atkins outlined the way to get the maximum weight loss benefits from his diet. If you choose to follow it, it's your choice and you agree to accept the benefits/risks. If you don't choose to follow it, again, you assume responsibility for your decision.
I am a diet soda junkie - I haven't been able to give it up completely yet, but I am trying to cut down. I am slowly weening myself off of it, cutting down by a bit each day.
