  • Ketosis

I just started Atkins. I'm on day 2. I bought some ketostix today and they show I'm already in ketosis (dark purple). What I need to know is, how soon will the weight start to come off now that I'm in ketosis? Some say you start to lose when you hit ketosis. Some say it may be 2 weeks to start losing. I know if it's not soon, I'll go off the diet. I'm so impatient. Just a couple of pounds is all I need to keep me going. I'm not extremely overweight just about 20 lbs, and that's all I want to lose. Also, can ketosis turn into ketoacidosis? Or is that a different problem altogether. Id appreciate any help!

    Re: Ketosis

YAY! You are in ketosis and you are obviously off to a great start!!!!!

The amount of weight you lose varies from person to person. I have noticed that heavier people tend to lose a larger amount of weight in the beginning or on a weekly basis on just about any diet. This diet really works well. Look at some of the before and afters of people. Some of them have progress records too. Check those out.

If you are in ketosis and on the induction phase of the diet you owe it to yourself to at least do this for two weeks and see how you do on induction. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. This does work, but you must follow the induction guidelines properly to jump start that weight loss. If you quit too soon, you will never know just how well it can work for you. This is what happens when people try this and stop after not really giving it a go...they walk away saying that it does not work....but they did not REALLY give it a full run if you know what I mean.

Weigh yourself only once a week. Do it at the same time of the day.
Try to be patient. I know its hard. I feel the same way....but remember that no one gets overweight overnight...it takes some time to take the weight off too.

I think you'll get the few punds you want to keep you going...but also be sure to MEASURE yourself with a tape. The scale can be decieving but the tape measure never lies.

Ketosis and ketoacidosis are two completely different things. Ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition that diabetics get when their blood sugar is dangrously high and out of control. So no, Ketosis will not turn into ketoacidosis. They are totally different.

If you don't have the Atkins book it is HIGHLY recommended. It will answer most of the questions you asked here and then some.

    Best of luck to you

    Kat

      Re: Ketosis

Thank you so much. I just get discouraged easy. I know that it takes time to take weight off, just like it takes time to put it on. I am just so impatient ... one of my faults! Along with no self control when it comes to eating! I will try the tape measure thing, I think I just need a little bit of progress every so often to keep me motivated. Thanks again!

        Re: Ketosis

I know how it can be difficult to keep motivated if we dont see instant results, but many people have found that even if they dont lose anyhting in the first 2 weeks of induction, if they continue following the rules, move on to the second phase of Atkins and start to add carbs in the order laid down they DO shift the weight in time.

Also many people discover other motivating aspects such as more energy, less gastric problems etc.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
