  • Help: Worried after 2 Days!

Please read and offer your suggestions.

Although I have not read the Atkins book (buying it today - 2002 version, correct?), I have reviewed this forum thoroughly for the correct induction process and food. I am a sugarholic, who needs to lose 40 lbs. After doing Atkins 2 full days, I got on the scale today and have not lost an ounce.
I know this is probably stupid, but how long before you start seeing results? Is it a good idea to buy Keosistixs? I need to know if I'm burning fat. Below is the menu I have been following:

BREAKFAST: I have been eating 2-3 scrambled eggs with 4 pieces of peppercorn bacon. I drink about 2 cups of coffee per day with 3 paks splenda and 1 teaspoon heavy whipping cream (0 sugar & <1 carb). If I choose not to eliminate coffee, will is slow down my weight loss? I can fight the so-called craving it may cause, but if it stops me from dropping lbs. I will eliminate.

LUNCH: I had 2 red hot link sausauges with mustard. I put these back twice before finally deciding to buy them. Each link has 240 calories, 21g fat, 3g carb, 0% dietary fiber, 1 g sugar, 9g protein. I read what was written about processed meat, but my net carb "calucations" put these at 2 carbs each. Can I eat these during induction or should I toss? My gut is telling me to toss.

DINNER: 1st day - 3 pcs. Popeyes fried chicken (breast, wing, leg) with skin on --- which I now realize was probably a mistake; 2 jalepeno peppers, salad with lettuce, 1 oz havarti cheese, 1 hard boiled egg, and 3 T ranch dressing (1 carb per 2 Tbs.

2nd day - 6 oz steak with 1 tablespoon (measured) of A-1 sauce (3 g carbs, 2 g sugar); salad with lettuce, 1 oz havarti cheese, 1 hard boiled egg, 2 pieces of bacon, 3 T ranch dressing. See any issues here? I realize the A-1 has to go. : (

BEVERAGE: Water, hot green tea with 2 paks splenda, Arizona diet green tea with ginseng does contain a small amout of honey buy has <1g carb and <1g sugar per 8 oz.

SNACK - Pork rinds 0 carbs

I have spent thousands of dollars taking pills and doing things in an effort NOT to eat, so being able to do is kind of freaking me out. The VP at my job (male) lost 50 lbs in 3 months doing Atkins and he doesn't even workout! I know this way of life works and I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

    Thank you in advance!

    ((Carling))

First things first, good for you getting that book...it's a life saver as you will see. Second, losing weight is different for everyone, and there's MANY MANY aspects/reasons why there is no weight loss. (Oh, and most men are just naturally lucky losing weight faster than woman...ugh!)

May I suggest you put the scale away for 2 weeks (I know, it's hard to do), and then base your weight loss then. Salt intake, extra carbs, and the change of diet some factors I see in your first 2 days.

Staying away from caffiene might be helpful for you. Dr. A says no to caffiene, minimal allowance of Splenda too.

Just keep in mind also, that as a woman we get to store more more water/salt etc. It does make a difference as to when you start this way of eating and when you begin your TOM.

Hope that helps you a bit to get started and to ease your fears

    Hang in there!

I will put the scale away. I'm also thinking about water pills (old habits die hard).

      Thank you!

Dr. Atkins wrote that his diet "is a particularly effect diuretic, so the water weight tends to come off fast on my program." So water pills are truly unnecessary unless you have a kidney problem/heart disease and cannot achieve a normal water balance.

Also Dr. Atkins advised us to take body measurements as well as weigh ourselves because the loss of inches represents fat emptying from our cells.

Things will probably make a lot more sense to you once you get the book! The easiest thing to do is use the list on page 124-127 (induction legal foods) and don't eat anything that isn't on there. Ok, not necessarily "easy", but less confusing. You've found this place, so that's a step in the right direction. Good luck, and let us know how its going!

Re: Help: Worried after 2 Days!

Everyone above has given great advice!

I noticed a lot of "little" sugars here and there--sausage, A-1, etc. These add up quickly, and I would suggest cutting them out completely. Salad dressings with 2g or less per serving are OK though...so double check the carb count on those. Splenda is limited to 3 packets a day, each packet counted as one gram. So with your coffee, you've already used all of your sweeteners for the day. I also want to say make sure you're drinking your water! Water is a natural diuretic. When I drink more I lose more....oooh and like others have said, watch out for TOM. I usually gain at least 5lb. during that time, so I don't beat myself up over what the scale says at that time of the month.

Once you read the book, SO many things make more sense! I am always going back and re-reading sections...I was really fascinated about HOW the diet works...the science behind it.

OK enough rambling...best of luck to you!

Re: Help: Worried after 2 Days!

Hide the scales!! Or get someone else to hide them so ur not tempted to have a sneaky weigh in. I dont think 2 days is enough time for your body to adjust to the different way you are eating. We were eating carbs for years before we changed to Atkins, it takes a few days for your body to adjust to 'fat burning' mode so please dont get disheartened. Weigh once a week, same time and day or once every 2 weeks. Just not every day as this doesnt give you a proper reading.

I see that your not having any veggies with ur lunch so it might be an idea to add some. Also just watch out with the sausages that it doesnt have any bread or starch fillers that can stall you.

Definately cut out the caffiene, although people have still lost weight whilst drinking coffee, caffiene is bad for you and has addictive tendencies. Just drink a min of 2 litres of water a day.

Are you doing any exercise? That will definately boost ur weight loss, I reccommend a gym but everyone enjoys different forms of exercise so do whatever you like doing.

How have you calculated 2 net carbs? It says 3g and it has 0 fiber so
3-0=3 carbs each. To get your net you subtract fiber from the carbs.

*(If you buy foreign products, from England and such they actually have the fiber carbs taken out already)

Re: Help: Worried after 2 Days!

Wow!!! Thanks for the feedback! I'm on my way out to Borders now. I need that book because I didn't know I was limited to 3 packs of Splenda PER DAY. I put 3 packs in a single cup of coffee and 2 packs in every cup of green tea! Yesterday, I honestly had close to a dozen packs of Splenda. The sugarholic in me assumed they were unlimited! Will specific information like this be in the Atkins book? Was Splenda around in 2002? This is the stuff I really need to know.

                  Thanks so much for everything!!!!

P.S. I threw out the A-1 and the sausages. I will quit drinking coffee for at least 2 weeks. I workout 4 days per week, so that's not an issue. I just want to see RESULTS as soon as possible. : )

Re: Help: Worried after 2 Days!

carling--yep, the info is in the book. It's divided into many chapters, each dealing with a specific issue, phase, or concept. There is SO much info in there, it's hard to get it all the first time. I've read mine cover to cover twice, and gone back for specific info countless times, and I STILL feel like I don't completely remember everything!

Good for you for getting rid of the sausages and A-1. The coffee will be hard to give up (for me, it was agony giving up Diet Dr Pepper!!!!!!) but you should feel better once you go through the DTs.

Drink LOTS and LOTS of water...at least 64oz. per day PLUS 8 oz for every 25lb you want to lose (I THINK....). I usually drink about 100oz. a day. On good days, I'll drink over a gallon. Water keeps you hydrated, it's a diuretic, it's an appetite surpressant, and it's a detoxifier. If you don't like plain water, you can add a slice of lemon or lime to it (lemon and lime juice count as a special food category, [along with olives, heavy cream, avocado, etc.] and you can have 2 tbsp per day of those.) and it really makes the water enjoyable.

Just stick with it, and hide the scale until your 14 days are up, and you'll be fine!

You guys are going to make me cry! Everyone is so nice! You must get tired of answering the same questions "newbies" like me.

Now a good news/bad news update:
First the bad news: I couldn't find the Atkins book. It went to a couple places and they were sold out. I will order from Amazon after this post.

Now the good news: I bought the Ketostix (20 strips for $8.79 at Meijers) and I am happy to report that my urine tested purple. It was not the deep, dark purple, but it was definitely purple and within in the large ketone content (80-160) quardrant. I'm so happy! At least, I feel as if I'm on the right track.

Thanks so much for you kindness and support. I really appreciate your patience.

Is decaf coffee ok? Just wondering.

                          Relax Carling...
Atkins is a permanent lifestyle, never a 2 day diet.

It isn't a diet at all, its a way to lovingly nourish your body and allow it to function the way it was meant to function.

Your body deserves time and patience from you as it makes changes.

You will lose complete sizes on Atkins without showing any scale movement at all, so let go of previous dysfunctional diet behaviors, especially scale watching.

And read all the stickies at the top of this forum.

                              Hi, Carling!

Bummer on not finding the book in your area. You may want to try online sellers or local thrift stores to find a used copy. I'm not sure where you're located, but there area so many thrift stores popping up these days. For a fraction of the price (..25cents-$1) you can most likely find someone else's copy of 2002. I don't have another used copy (since I forward it on to a friend), but I'll keep my eyes open for one around my part and I'll let you know if I find one.

"Stickies" are the post that are "stuck" or pinned at the top of each area of the board with lots of important information. Such as in this forum of Atkins-14-Day... there are stickies stuck at the top of the page. There's tons of information about Induction that will get your started. Hope that helps.

Just keep in mind, doll, that this is a way of eating for life and not a quick fix of losing weight. Although we might wish for it like tossing a coin into the fountain and pray like crazy that 15 pounds will drop off over night. I wish...lol...but reality sets in.

May you find peace and enjoyment through this way of eating.
