  • Picking a goal weight AKA Thinking Ahead

    Hey y'all,

I've been reading over in the FAQ section (Highly Recommended!) and just read the thread on picking a goal weight and I clicked the link and it calculated my goal weight to be 180. Wooo! This makes me very happy because I don't have as much to lose and this is the weight I remember being happy at. I've had friends tell me that since I am 5'5" that I should weigh 150 but my reply has always been that 180 felt great to me. Once I reach that goal, I can always reassess then.

    I changed my signature!

Yup, that's the best way to do it,imo. It also lets your body stabalize and really puts an exclamation point on your work when you look back and assess your progress at a reasonable point.

Weight is an arbitrary measure that can't be trusted. Work off of body fat % and "feel" and you'll be making a good decision.

Good luck on the journey there, btw!

I don't really understand those calculators, I'm 6'2" and it put my goal weight at around 180 too. Is the difference between male and female that big?

Here's where they explain how they calculated the weight:

I don't totally understand this, I'm 5'10" and it says 162... which I understand is what I have for goal... but the difference, yes I know I'm younger, just seems kinda insane.

I'm using the people's choice numbers which are the first listed below the stats.

Got your message Sadie, thanks! I thought the people's choice option seemed a little weird. I read the info page briefly when I first was going over the weight loss calculators and it said that they polled people to find out what they thought they should weigh. I remember thinking that doesn't seem to be a way to make a very scientific result. Reading it over again it makes a bit more sense.

I still don't really know which calculator to use though. Hmmmmmm

Re: Picking a goal weight AKA Thinking Ahead

My "goal" weight said I should be 162 (People's Choice thingy) but depending on the calculator, it ranged from 125-164. God help me, 125? I think my LEFT LEG weighs 125...

I mean, I'm not there yet, but I think I would look like a waif at 162. My goal (the one I set) is to be 180. But who knows. Maybe I can do a 162, no problem.

                    Interesting calculator, anyway! Thanks Sadie.

I know, that's what I think is messed up. I always heard that an "ideal" weight for a woman was 100lb. at 5 ft. adding 5lb. for every inch. If that 5lb. per inch rule applies, you should have 10lb. on me. So either I should be at 152...or you should be at 172.
