Re: Is There a Caloric Threshold?

Yes- you are supposed to eat no more than 4 oz cheese (and of the allowed type(s) only) per day. Other than that, you should keep in mind the measures of those veggies, and yes, even the protein. Try putting your entire day's consumption (or planned menu) into www.fitday.com and see whether your %'s are close to 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. On induction, total carbs less grams fiber sould be 20 or less.

If you're going heavy on the cheese, then by all means, cut it down to the legal portion size of 3-4 ounces daily. The other thing is the salad dressing. Most serving sizes for salad dressing is 1-2 tablespoons----that is 1-2 tablespoons measured with standard cooking measurements, not an estimate of a tablespoon. Typically the dressings have 80-150 calories per serving. So if you are using 1/4 cup of dressing, you can be eating anywhere from 160-300 calories.

Also if you need to eat that amount of cheese in order to feel satisfied with your lunch, you might want to look carefully at the amount of protein and carbs you are eating. Many processed meats and even salad dressing contain sugars and/or starch-based fillers.

Like Heidi said, eat only the amount of food your body needs. It's okay to exceed your BMR or AMR or whatever on Atkins by a couple hundred calories because for some reason, the lipolysis/ketosis allows that. But don't over-indulge on any food whether it's cheese or cream or roast beef.

i'm not tyring to be a contrarian, really, and i do appreciate the info, but i have read and re-read the DANDR, so i do not eat processed meats, nor do i buy salad dressings with sugars and fillers or eat 1/4 cup of it the dressing i do like. it's just a matter of cutting back on the quantity, i believe. i am going to plug in into fitday and find out where the calories net out in all of this. thanks.

          Renee,

Here is a link to my fitday. It's kind of sporadic, but I have journaled the last few days. I've lost 4 lbs this week after bouncing around between 198 and 200 for the last 6 weeks I'd say. We are ALL different, and every chart is going to be different too for the most part. No one can tell you how many calories any of us should be eating, because our bodies are different. BUT I can tell you that I've never been a calorie counter in this entire year and I've lost 75ish pounds... yes I notice what it is because fitday tells me, but that's the only reason.

Dr. A says even though he says we don't have to count calories, he also says that does NOT give us a license to gorge.

Re: Is There a Caloric Threshold?

Lulubell, I respond to posts in general terms that's why I give 'for examples' alot because there are alot of people who have the same concerns and questions. I also know from being on ADBB for almost 3 years that there are people who eat 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salad dressing on their salads or mix 1 cup of mayo into 1 can of tuna for their lunch or eat 4 egg-omelettes not because it takes 4 eggs to satisfy their hunger, but that's the amount they are used to eating. I'm not saying you do these things, but I know that someone reading this thread does and will be able to use that to troubleshoot/tweak their Atkins.

Good idea, Lulubell - I would be surprised if what you listed comes to an awfully high number of calories unless you are having your salads swiming in dressing.
BTW if you want someone else to see your fitday entries you can do that by clicking on the 'home' tab once you log on there and scrolling down to click on the button called 'make my journal public'
You will be given a link ending something like 'owner=lulubell' (or whatever name you use there) which you can copy/paste here so others can look at your menu with the numbers.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
