  • INDUCTION & SPLENDA

    Hello,

I am in my second week on induction and recently stared using Splenda as suggested. I seem to be having increased anxiety with the artificial sweetener and would like to know if Equal is really off limits since I find that this does not seem to be a problem with my existing anxiety/panic condition.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yes it is the one with aspertame. I really would like to know if the reason for not using aspertame is case by case that it may inhibit weight loss or is there another reason for not using it?

        Re: INDUCTION & SPLENDA

Have you got a copy of DANDR 2002 edition? This governs what is/isn't allowed during induction, and all the other aspects of Atkins dieting as well.

Atkins says to avoid aspartame and use sucralose (Splenda) or saccharin instead (page 124). He goes into additional detail on page 128 and allows other sweeteners, including sugar alcohols. You still need to count any carbs (usually 1g per a packet) and because of questionable safety issues, he limits saccharin to no more than 3 servings per day. Aspartame is discouraged, and you will see why if you read about it. Best not to take chances with it. There's a bit of controversy out there!

Of course, you don't need any of them at all...

Edited to add a note - I use equivalent of 1-2 packs/day or less than 10 per week of saccharin, but have used the others when necessary if I ran out, and had no negative effects. Everyone's body is different, so you will just have to see for yourself if you react, and keep the quantity low to be on the safe side, in light of possible dangers of larger amounts of any of them.

          Re: INDUCTION & SPLENDA

Artificial sweeteners are a "your mileage may vary" sort of thing. We've had members who have had problems with Splenda, members who have had problems with the sugar alcohols, members who have had problems with aspartame, etc.

So if one artificial sweetener gives you problems, you can try others on the list. Or you can evaluate your menu/lifestyle and see if you really need to include artificial sweeteners.

Is Stevia still up in the air? I don't know if I've ever read for sure that it's OK. If so you might try that keepinthinner.
