  • Induction confusing and hard for me

Hello all. I am new here. I introduced myself under "new members introduction" thread

I am confused about how much calories we are allowed per day

    or protein
    or fat

I began Atkins on Tuesday, today is my 3rd. I use the carb counter on the net.

This is what I eat usually as far as carbs go:

About 8 cups of broccoli and cauliflower salad ( fresh, raw, chopped with olive oil and lemon juice)

    3-4 eggs a day
    2-4 oz of cheese

According to the carb counter they all add to approximately 22 grams of net carbs per day, however according to FitDay (another member suggested I use there) I eat many more carbs using the same measurements. Am I doing this right?

Also, my total calories come to about 1000 per day.

I do not have the book yet. It is not available in my country (at least, it was not there in the 3 bookstores I checked out) but a member here said that I could order it from amazon.com
Until then I do not want to make a mistake, cheat and have to start all over again. In a place like this (Meditterenean country) where pasta, risotto/rice dishes, pastries and freshly baked breads are widely available it is already hard on me to stay away from carbs.

Also, I know that we cannot eat any nuts just yet (love those yummy roasted hazelnuts) but what about the following vegetables?

    -carrots ( steamed or raw)
    -pumpkin

Thanks in advance and good luck all

Read the stickys at the top of the induction forum.

You don't count calories, you count net carbs. You might find a copy of the book on EBAY, or in a thrift store, book exchange, or other used goods outlet. There are 4 sitting in the basement of a church I take my son to for Cub Scouts, for sale (rummage sale basement) at 25 cents each. Would you like one??

Try the webpage below and go through the links at the bottom, especially the rules and acceptable food sections. We go by the 2002 verson of the book here, so when you order it, or get it from Boonie (first class by the way Boonie, very cool of you to offer) try to make sure you get that edition.

Re: Induction confusing and hard for me

Pumpkin is fine, but remember the limitations of portion. I believe it's limited to 1 cup.

Carrots I believe carrots are considered a starchy vegetable and not allowed until rung 9 of OWL.

In the absence of a book right now, check out this link. It lists the foods allowed during induction and the quantities allowed for vegetables.
        http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6781
This has the rules of induction:
        http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6782

As you can see, it's not about calories during induction. Eat legal foods within their limits, but only until satisfied. Don't stuff yourself, but if you're hungry...eat!

I think your measurements might be off a bit. 8 cups of broccoli & cauliflower would be a LOT of veggies. Remember you're allowed only 1 cup of these vegetables. 1 cup of broccoli for example would have 8 total carbs - 4.5g fiber = 3.5g of net carbs. We count the net carbs towards your total of 20g per day.

If you use something like Fitday, it will show you the percentages of fat, protein, and carbs. You want to try to maintain about 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs during induction. This is the % of calories from these. So don't worry about grams of proteins or fats, but more the percentages of what you eat.

If that's all you're eating, then you really need to get some meats and protein in there and get more salad veggies into your plan. Take a look at my fitday if you can (below) and you'll see the types & quantities of foods you can eat. Just remember I'm in OWL/maintenance, so I've added in foods not legal in induction. I'm also much heavier and a man. So my caloric intake will be much higher.

Best of luck, and don't hesitate to ask stuff here. Perhaps someone with an extra book would be willing to share or send one to you. You might also be able to find one on Amazon used for cheap!

Re: Induction confusing and hard for me

Thanks Boonie, thats very nice of you to offer. I wonder how much the shipping would be to Turkey from wherever you are

Gosh, I just saw we are to limit the veggies (broccoli, cauliflower) to 1 cup per day. I must sound like an idiot.

I do eat them raw as salad and thought 1 cup equaled 2 gr net carbs. I also eat lettuce as my salad greens.

So, if I am to eat 1 cup of these veggies and that is around 3.5-4 gr of carbs, and 2 cups of salad greens, which must be around 3-4 gr of carbs., and 4 oz of cheese which is 4 gr of carbs where will I get the rest of my carbs?
Am I supposed to eat 7-8 eggs a day to get the rest of my carbs? This is very confusing.

ps-Higgies, I am going to read your fitday entries right now. Thanks

Yeah, Boonie...get the book over there quick!! Just kidding!

Read that rules of induction post. That will give you a very good idea of how this works.

For me, a typical day is:
            Breakfast:
2 or 3 egg omelet with 0.5 cup sausage and 1 oz. cheddar cheese

            Lunch:
Chicken Breast on 2-3 cups salad greens with 2-3 Tblspn Ranch or Caesar dressing

            Snack:
4 salami slices with 1 oz. cheddar cheese

            Dinner:
10-12 oz. steak, chicken breast, or pork chops
1 cup broccoli or other acceptable vegetable

Something like that. Do you not eat meat? Is that why you think all you get is eggs? Also, you don't HAVE to get to 20g carbs, that's just the limit. Many people eat less than that regularly.

Re: Induction confusing and hard for me

higgies, your chart looks great and so professionally done..I checked to see if you had entries during the induction phase but i realized later you started in 2004.

i checked my chart and I have 59% fat, 9% carbs and 32% protein

              net carbs are 18 gr

ofcourse I only joined fitday today. Yesterday I am sure my carb count (according to this chart) would have been way too high..I had a spinach, onion, tomato, sausage omlette for breakfast and that alone was enough to get me in the double digits I bet

PS-I made a mistake when I checked my spreadsheet (I was using prior to fitday) and I saw that I actually eat 5 cups of raw broccoli and cauliflower not 8..Of course it is still too much I know now.

Re: Induction confusing and hard for me

guess we posted at the same time

I do eat meat, however, beef/chicken/fish etc have no carbs..eggs do on the other hand, ehich s why I was counting the carbs I was intaking

I saw a few days of your entries

You eat bacon and salami a lot

The problem for me is that I would eat both but I am not sure if it would be a good thing since the labels here are not detailed like those in the US. I would not know if these things are processed and/or contain sugar. So, this leaves me stuck with plain old beef chicken and fish.
