Make sure to take your supplements!

I have just spent 3 days of not being able to breath, heart pounding out of my chest, very weak could barely stand up for 30 seconds or more. And why you ask? Because I didn't take my supplements and my electrolytes dropped.

I did a good clean induction up until then was on day 9. I drank my 64oz of water plus 8 oz for the 25lbs I needed to lose and I exercised 6 days a week. Well all the water and the exercise caused me to basically deplete my supplies of sodium. potassium, magnesium and calcium and a couple of others. The main one I was missing was potassium. The Dr. told me I should be taking a supplement to replace these things unless I am eating foods which are rich in them. For Potassium bananas, oranges and boiled potatos are best but they are not allowed on induction. Other foods contain potassium but you have to eat quite a bit to get enough.

So my advice is please please take your supplements. A good multivitamen so you don't end up like me. Now I have to start induction over and I can't exercise for another few days until my strength is back and they can regulate my heartbeat and breathing down to normal levels. Which today I am feeling much better I can actually get up and walk around. This makes induction flu a walk in the park. Which is initially what I thought it was until it got really bad.

    Thank you for listening.

    Re: Word of Warning

Argh, thanks for the warning. I have also been doing well on the plan, eating right, exercising and drinking lots of water and I have been taking my supplements. I addition to a one-a-day "carb" supplement I also take the ones DANDR recommend for weight loss (chromium, L-carnitine w/ co-enzyme q10, and essential oils). However, I just looked at my one a day and it only has 3% of my total potassium needs. It seems pretty lame that they'd they make a one-a-day specially for low carb dieters that doesn't contain all the potassium we would need! SIGH I guess I'm going to have to find yet another pill with just potassium, or maybe a new one-a-day.

SO I guess an additional warning would be to check your pill content percentages even if you think you are taking the right thing!

Keep in mind that serving for serving avacado has more potassium than a banana or a potato. Check out these sites that tell you the potassium rich foods. Find the ones that are acceptable on induction and eat those instead of vegetables that are vitamin and mineral deficient (like iceberg lettuce). I agree we all should supplement, but I also am a firm believer that we should be making an effort to eat healthy vegetables and lots of them!

After perusing these websites, I see the following vegetables that are allowed on induction:

      Pumpkin
      Spinach
      Tomato
      Mushrooms
      Kohlrabi
      Greens
      Chinese Cabbage
      Brussels Sprouts
      Broccoli
      Artichoke
      Celery

      Avacado

      Chicken
      Fish
      Canned Tuna
      Turkey

Then as you move into ongoing weight loss, there are lots of other foods to be eating that get you even more.
