  • I have question about bacon.

Which brand of regular bacon would you suggest buying. I always buy Canadian bacon, but I wanted a change to regular, like Ocsar Mayer or something like it. What should I look for in the ingredients? Thank you.

I believe Dr. Atkins reccomends staying away from Bacon that includes Nitrates in the ingredients.

Re: I have question about bacon.

Bacon is just toooo good to pass up, even if it has undesireable curing agents in it. The issue with nitrates is a minimal risk of cancer associated with eating large amounts. The amount of sugar added to the curing brine is usually going to add only 1-2 carbs, as the brine is rinsed off when the bacon is packed.

Sometimes you can buy the grocery's own "brand" of fresh, bulk "seasoning bacon, and it will be free of the additives.
If you can't find it, just get the one with the lowest carb on the label; if it lists sugar despite this, count 1g per 2 serving sizes.

Re: I have question about bacon.

I will not give up my bacon! It is so wonderful. I could write songs about my love for bacon. I always try and buy from the butcher, but in a pinch Farmer Johns or any brand will do. I know, I know the nitrates, the sugar, but as Boonie points out its minimal. The only problem I have with bacon is eating too much of it. So I just mainly crumble a little on salads, or crumble some into an egg scramble, and not daily.

Re: I have question about bacon.

I buy either Applegate Farms which is not cured in sugar and is nitrate free (I have to get it at the whole foods markets), or the Hormel microwave kind... It's not the healthiest for this WOE but it's so fast, easy, and perfectly thin...

Re: I have question about bacon.

If you have a Kroger, they have a store brand bacon that has no sugar, and it's very good.

Re: I have question about bacon.

Winn Dixie does, too, in 3 or 5 pound boxes (it's been awhile since there's no W-D in Maryland; I got it in NC 7 years ago. Only drawback is unless you freeze portions, or else cook a lot in a short time, it can get moldy in your fridge. The lack of the nitrates shortens the shelf life.

Re: I have question about bacon.

Maple bacon is my favorite! I go with the lowest-sodium bacon possible; once it is finished frying, I add maple extract to it. Oh, and it has to be extra crispy!
