  • "Waste" Issues

Hi All, I am still in induction but having some concerns. First of all, I am constantly constipated. I have tried laxitive teas and then laxitive pills and instead of working overnight, it sometimes doesn't happen for another day or two. I make sure I eat my veggies and drink plenty of water but....any ideas?

The other issue is with my urine. I drink water all day long and the last 2 days, no matter how much I drink my urine is still quite yellow (indicating dehydration?) and has a high smell. Should I be worried about this? Has anyone else had this happen?

    Thanks for reading.

    Re: "Waste" Issues

What supplements are you taking? That could account for the change in urine color/odor. I know many swear by flax and psyllium for constipation issues. You stated that you are getting your water and veggies in - are you getting enough fat??

Hello, thank you for the response. Yes, plenty of fat and of course, protein. I am eating by the book for sure and I do see a difference in the way my clothes fit but these issues are concerning to me. I am hoping I am not doing something bad to my kidneys or something.

I'm not a doctor, but unless you had kidney function issues prior to this, eating according to plan should not cause any problems. Do you take any medications?

Just birth control pills. I do take a multivitamin but I've taken the same one for about a year now and didn't experience what I am now with the urine. I also had a full physical in the last 4 months for work and no problems were found then so....I guess I'm just weird.

I would try upping your water a little bit for the next few days to see if that makes any difference. Also, I am sure someone else with experience with this will be along with some advice!

                Re: "Waste" Issues

How much water is "all day long"? If you are sipping on 50 ounces "all day long" then that is NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Ketosis will cause your urine to smell stronger. The Atkins plan has a diuretic effect, so you need LOTS of water. It could be that you are getting dehydrated, so make sure to drink up.

As far as constipation goes. Do you have true constipation where you are straining and it's painful and you cannot go to the bathroom? Or, are you just a little concerned because you normally go every day and now on Atkins you haven't gone in a few days?? Because if it's the latter case, that's normal. Pre-atkins you were eating lots of junk food filled with fillers. Of course you were expelling it...and lots of it. Now you are eating high quality food that gets utilized by the body and there is just simply LESS WASTE. Two things to keep in mind: 1) if you are dehydrated, that contributes to the constipation problem 2) if you are only eating lettuce and the likes as your "salad veggies" then you are not getting enough fiber. Choose vegetables with higher fiber content. Jicama is an excellent "salad veggie" choice.

                  Re: "Waste" Issues

                  HI,
I'm new to the atkins thing (in fact haven't started yet due to the flu (the real flu not the induction flu that i still need to figure out what is)

but anyway, i'm dropping this line to share a tip on water intake. This is something my mom has done and its rubbed off on me. Decide how much water you want to drink in a day, then fill a pitcher or two with that amount and make sure its finished by the end of the day, even if you stand there and drink two glasses at 8 o'clock when you just realized that you hadn't drank as much as you should.
if it gets warm, take a fresh glass from the tap, drink that, then empty that much out of your pitcher...for measuring purposes. a bit of a hassle, but still keeps you on track. you're counting down this way, instead of counting up.
if you go to work, fill a travel bottle with water from your pitcher.

i like this cause its a visual of how much further i need to go...plus i don't mind tepid water, so that's a bonus too.
hope i helped. keep truckin'! and i hope to be joining your ranks soon!

                    Re: "Waste" Issues

Another good tip on water intake if you don't think you are getting enough. Everytime you go to the restroom, go to the kitchen and drink a glass of water. Not a big glass, but 4-8 ounces.. maybe a big sip. That way it keeps the cycle going..as you expel some you put some back in.

If you are taking a B complex vitamin, that will cause a change in urine color. When I take a B complex vitamin, my urine is neon yellow even if I've had over a gallon of water that day.

                        Re: "Waste" Issues: Water

Hello all. Regarding the water, I drink 2 gallons daily. I do eat other veggies than lettuce but have never tried jicama as suggested so I will do that.

To answer the movement question: At first I was concerned because I was used to going every day and then not for 3 days. I didn't get worried really until a week went by and I was feeling sick because I had not gone.

Yeah, I guess I'll up the fiber sources.

                        Thank you all again!
