Just wondering if your body becomes atkins resistant with multiple tries at the atkins diet

  • #2
Re: Does Your Body Become Atkins Resistant

Dr. Atkins warned that if you keep retreating to Induction for every minor diet infraction, you could mess up your metabolism which will make your weight loss more difficult. Difficult is not the same as impossible.

Another thing he mentioned is that if you constantly switch from a fat-burning metabolism to a carb-burning one, you might screw up your general health as well.

I think folks who have difficulty "staying on track" need to sit down and be honest with themselves:

Do they really want to lose weight and how badly do they want to lose it?
Are they willing to give Induction an honest by-the-book try for 2 weeks or not?
Have the read the book and know that Induction is not the entire Atkins Diet?
What things have derailed them in the past? What are strategies to fight these triggers?
    etc. etc.

All the responsibility for staying on track for any diet or lifestyle change is on our shoulders. It's not your son's fault for having to have a birthday cake---you're the one making the decision to eat 'just one piece' or not. It's not your spouse's fault for not waking you up early enough to work out---you were the one who gave that responsibility to your spouse, rather than setting the alarm clock yourself. In the end, it's down to each of us to assume full responsibility for our choices.

I wondered the same thing actually, as this is my third attempt. Second time induction flu was a nightmare...but this time was great and I feel wonderful, but to be honest I am really sticking to it...last times I drank alcohol (spirits only)This time its like my body is going wooo hooo...have to wait and see if I lose weight though.
I have heard that you only lose alot of weight with induction 1st time around

This is my 2nd serious attempt - the first one was successful in that I lost weight - almost all that I needed to - but I didn't follow properly and gained it all back over a couple of years. I tried LOTS of times to get back on and never managed to make it more than a couple of days until this time. I lost about 12 pounds on induction on my first successful attempt. This time, I lost over 17 - needless to say, I don't subscribe to the you've only got one "golden-shot" idea because it didn't work that way for me. And there are a lot of folks in STAC (second-time-around club) that are having wonderful successes. I do believe that going back and forth between fat-burning and carb-burning eating can wreak havoc with your metabolism, though and that may be why it is hard for us to actually get back to following Atkins after numerous attempts.

me too, I was actually sitting here wondering the same thing myself. I've only been following induction solidly for about a week (8 days, but whose counting) and lost 10 lbs in the first 3 days - and now over the last 5 days, have lost nothing. I know that I need to not weigh in everyday - but for now, as I'm not losing - I weigh in more for curiosity's sake. I had joined a no weigh challenge - and cheated last friday - I let myself get so stressed out (easy to do with two three years olds and a new puppy in the house) that I considered slipping off plan - but after listening to myself - decided against it and I chose to weigh myself instead - and blew the challenge.

Anyway - this is my third serious try at Atkins. I was succesful with both serious trys and lost over 100 lbs sticking to plan. Then I let motherhood and life in general get the best of me, and big time over indulged - as I am an emotional eater... I mean I was an emotional eater.. hehe. Now that I feel like my insulin levels are in check, I no longer feel a need to eat for any other reason than being hungry. Starting today though, I am going to revise what I eat just a bit -- up my water -- and see if I can get through this stall. I have never stalled this early before - especially when I have at least 90+ lbs to still lose. At least I've kicked the cravings, am eating more veggies and am excercizing. If anyone has any other ideas how to get through a stall, I'd love your input.

Elisabeth - Have you read the sticky at the top - Weight Loss is Not Linear - it really answers your question about not losing anything the past 5 days. Congrats on your success so far!

I think it works differently for those hopping on/off frequently and for those having several yearś between attempts.
