  • Induction, then Low Glycemic?

I just had a question and I hope that no one will get angry about it. I am just curious.

I was wondering if you thought it would be OK to do Atkins induction for two weeks, then proceed to eat low glycemic? Low glycemic is not exactly the same as low carb, it is mainly about eating healthy carbs.

I would like to do induction, because I have done it before and I found that is worked very well for kicking those sugar and comfort food addictions. I am a food addict and I don't want it to spiral out of control when I get older. I am 22 and my metabolism is not what it used to be.

I am 5'10" and 158 pounds. I would like to be 135-140 pounds.
I started at 170 a few years ago and got down to lowest 149...and for months it never budged...I just feel that my body will never let me get to my goal.

Should I really go through with the entire Atkins "rung" thing, or do you think it may work to do induction, then Low Glycemic?
If not, how many weeks do you suggest I do Induction? I mean, I am not far off from my goal...20 pounds. Even if I got close to 140 i'd be happy (sigh). I heard that if you don't have much to lose, it is best to do the minimum (14 days) of induction.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

I am thinking that it may be a bad idea to do Induction if I won't stick with it.

Maybe I should just do Low Glycemic if I plan to stick to that in the end.

I would do induction for two weeks and go through the rungs. I do not understand low glycemic diet completely but I believe that in OWL Atkins would you give you a lot of the same food choices.

I agree with Maggie's suggestion of following the 4 Atkins phases to get used to eating all the 'good carbs' we add during OWL.
As far as I know the OWL levels/rungs are laid out in a 'GI' order, with the lower GI foods added first so we find out which foods our body can cope with.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

The On-Going Weight Loss phase (OWL) of Atkins is, by definition, low glycemic. All the foods added during OWL Phase are low glycemic. In fact, OWL is a bit better than something like Sugar Busters or the GI Diet because Dr. Atkins has us add low glycemic foods in a step-wise manner---starting from the lowest glycemic index foods (vegetables) to the highest glycemic index foods (grains).

That's one of the great misunderstandings about Atkins. Alot of people believe Induction phase is the entire Atkins diet. We used to see that alot more when we had a forum specifically for "Low Carb" dieting here. People used to do "Atkins", then do 'low carb' by adding more carbs to their diet and more food categories, then they used to post in the Induction forum that they were doing something revolutionary and non-Atkins---when in reality they only showedthey never read past Chapter 11 in the book.

I would stick to induction for only the 14 days since you have 20 lbs left, then move onto owl, to give you a chance to get thru the rungs.

              Re: Induction, then Low Glycemic?

Oh, I thought that I read somewhere that Low Glycemic is slightly different. I mean if I eat low GI then I can have a large variety of fruits, unlimited. I really love fruit and it is hard for me to give it up for ..maybe over a month?

At the same time, I do know...to lose weight I need to give up something.

I have done Atkins before...I did it for two months straight. I fell of the bandwagon because I felt it was not for me. Everyone in my life were eating things I couldn't have, and my boyfriends family (all a little overweight) got very sensitive and angry with me because they knew I wanted to lose weight...so it was a sensitive topic. His mom would make us dinner and she would be mad because I said I couldn't eat certain things. I feel scared to go through that again.

And love carbalicious food too. Blah.. haha. I think my problem was that I stayed on induction phase for almost the two whole months when my body didn't really need it. I needed to go through the rungs. But it amazed me that I stayed on it for so long and just stopped losing weight at 149...when I'd like to weigh 135...still a bit to go.

Thanks for everyones help. I will consider all of this. But I do agree, it probably won't be so hard if I simply fo 14 day induction...then move through the rungs.

I just hate to think I will be counting carbs for the rest of my life. I counted calories and I hated it. I hate counting
And once in a while I like to splurge. Maybe like twice a month? I feel I can't do that??

OH, and another question! I heard that it is bad to go back to induction and go back into ketosis every time you mess up. I mean, don't you have to get back into ketosis to lose weight? Or does it really not matter?
Because I tend to mess up once in a while.

A low carbohydrate diet is one where carbohydrates (total carbs not this net carb stuff) is 100 grams or less. If you have less than 100 grams of carbs daily, you should be producing ketones. So you are still 'in ketosis'.

Induction Phase has 1 big purpose: to kick start your body into producing ketones. That's it. Sure it also helps you to break some carb habits, by controlling cravings---but that craving control is due to the ketone production.

Dr. Atkins warns about 'retreating to Induction' for every minor infraction because he noted it might make you more metabolically resistant to weight loss and because reinforces bad eating behaviors.
