    Steaks fried with onions(?)

Hello everyone! What is the opinion of onions around here? I do understand that they are on the acceptable foods list, but they are under the "other" vegetable categories (category for higher carbohydrate vegetables). Are they significantly higher?

Mature raw onions have about 11 net carbs per cup per fitday...so it depends on what you compare them to, but yes, they are pretty carby. But, if you're only using a small amount to flavor your other foods, then you can probably fit them in to your daily totals. If you're eating a whole cup, then it might be a bit much for induction level carbs. Hope this helps~

All vegetables on the Induction Acceptable Foods list are okay for Induction. So I don't see the need to shun a veggie just because it's on the other vegetable list. The veggies on the 'other list' tend to have the most fiber, vitamins and minerals. So eat up. They're delicious and nutritious.

Don't be afraid of carbohydrates. Atkins is about limiting them, not cutting them out of your diet completely.

I am new to low carb eating.

I think I cheated during induction and fried onions. It did not seem to slow my progress as I am now at my ideal weight of 133lb from 146lbs. I am not an expert, but I found that eating a satisfying meal with fried onions made me feel satisfied, and "pampered."

This is the first time that I have "dieted" ( however I am striving to make this a way of life now as I really ejoy eating low carb) for so long!!! My previous attemps would only last two weeks. This has been five weeks and I am loving it.

Onions aren't cheating - even on induction, as Megs said earlier. I am sure it was my earlier post that was taken to mean that onions were "Bad" but I don't think I said that and apologize if it came across that way.

That's not cheating; that's following the plan! Onions are perfectly cool for induction; just need to make sure to keep them limited to an amount that allows you to bring your daily total of carbs in at 20g.

Congrats on your weight loss so far!

                Re: Steaks fried with onions(?)

Eating any food that's on the Induction Acceptable Foods List is NOT CHEATING!!!!! You are completely allowed to eat 1 cup of onions or 1 cup of broccoli or 1 cup of artichokes or 1 cup of pumpkin or 1 cup of rhubarb. Lettuce and spinach are only 2 of the 54 vegetables we are allowed to eat. Don't limit yourselves because lettuce is not a nutritive vegetable as compared to broccoli or Swiss Chard. Spinach is minimally better than lettuce. So look over the lists and eat up. Eating as 'close to zero carbs a day' is the wrong way to approach your Induction because you'll end up eating too much protein. And as Dr. Atkins said, excessive protein converts to sugar which is stored as body fat.

Just be careful how the vegetable is prepared. That is, you want to avoid vegetable dishes that use batter or breading/bread crumbs because batter/bread/bread crumbs are not allowed during Induction.

                  Re: Steaks fried with onions(?)

Another thing to remember is not to be too hard on yourself. Follow the plan and do what works. As long as you're not eating a bushel of fried onions. I can imagine someone eating over 20 carbs if they aren't truly watching what they are eating and feeding into their indulgent needs. But if you want to "indulge" in a fried onion and it's 11 carbs - go ahead, just make sure that everything else carbwise and veggie wise is in order to stay under the 20 if you're still in induction.

                  Congrats on the 5 weeks....
