    Hi everyone.
    I'm on day 4 of induction...and no obvious signs of ketosis yet! My daughter is also on day 4 and she has had very strong smelling urine since yesterday...a sign of ketosis?

    Is it possible to be in ketosis without the symptoms being obvious...ie breath, urine etc?
    I've lost 6lbs so far and I'm following a clean induction...how long does it normally take for ketosis to kick in?

    Any advice would be great! Thanks

    Yes it is possible...I don't have either of those symptoms of ketosis. Some of the other symptoms are decrease in appetite, improvement in energy and well-being, loosening of clothes, weight loss, loss of inches.

    I like to use the Ketostix to double-check, though they're not always reliable indicators, either. I bought ReliOn Ketone Test Strips ($6 for 50) in the pharmacy section of WalMart with the diabetic supplies...I don't know what stores you have available in Scotland, but I imagine you could get them at a large pharmacy.

      Thanks attek...I think my appetite is decreasing slightly...and I have noticed a taste in my mouth today but nothing major...I actually put it down to my mouth being very dry at the moment!
      I'll have a look around for the ketostix...but I guess the proof will be in weight loss and loose clothing!!

        One thing you definately MUST do is make sure you drink plenty of water and supplement your body's vitamin/mineral needs. During induction, you will rapidly flush excess bulk, water, and electrolytes as you switch to the state of ketosis. If you do not replace the water and electrolytes, you stand to suffer weakness, headaches, dizziness, cramps, etc. ....if you are dehydrated, your urine will be more concentrated and have a darker color & stronger odor.

            By the way, do you and your daughter have Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution (revised version 2002 ed.) ? This book will help you know important details about this diet

              Yeah we do thanks...have read it through...but tend to forget some things and books don't always tell you every variation. I prefer to hear things from the horses mouth so to speak!

                    It takes me exactly three days to get into ketosis. Also, the only way that I know when I am in it is the color of the stix. One other thing of note is that, for me, the color only changes in the afternoons. If I check it first thing in the morning, it doesn't usually show up.

                    1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
                    what the rungs mean to me:
                    rung 1 - more veggies
                    rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
                    rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                    rung 4 - berries, melon
                    rung 5 - wine -
                    rung 6 - beans, hummus
                    rung 7 - other fruits
                    rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
                    rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
                    Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
                    (on to pre-maintenance)

                      It depends on how quickly you deplete your body's reserve supply of glycogen. You won't likely run low until day 2, and depending on what you eat on day 2 you could start switching over then, or it could be day 3. If you cave to cravings which tend to hit hard during the transition interim and eat more carbs than you should, you can delay (or prevent) the onset of ketosis...
