BMR confused!!

  • BMR confused!!

    Hi everyone
    I hope someone can help as i'm a little confused

    I've been using fitday.com and was checking out my BMR. For Monday and Tuesday it has my BMR as 1323 but from Wednesday til now it's 1627 or there abouts.
    Why has it changed? Or have I been doing something wrong? Maybe i'm not checking in the right place...I go into calories burned and it gives me a total and breakdown for each day or an average for the week!

    Please can someone tell me if i'm checking it right...or even if i'm looking in the right place to get my BMR. I'm kinda new to all this and could be confused for a while LOL

    Have you changed your weight, lifestyle (from sedatary to moderate) or activity level in Fitday?

      No i've not changed my weight but I did put in some activity for Monday and Tuesday. Does activity drop your BMR?

        Are you are looking at the total number or what it calls your 'basal rate', 'lifestyle rate' & 'activity rate'? The 'activity rate' will vary according to what exercises you log whereas the other two tend to stay the same till you log a new weight.

        F/60 yrs/5ft 5.5" (Though due to collapsing vertebrae I am now only 5'3" - but I refuse to recalculate my BMI )

          Hi again
          I've just tried tweaking with activity levels and it's not changing anything! I have 3 days with a BMR of 1323 and 4 days with a BMR of 1627! I'm so confused LOL

            Hi Elizellen,

            I'm looking at my basal rate...I can see my activity rate changes if I put in an activity and of course my overall calories burned changes then too...but i'm confused as to why my basal rate was 1323 for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then changed to 1627 from Thursday onwards I can understand why it would change with a weight change...but I didn't register until Friday and so put in my CW and I've not changed it at all!

              That is odd.

              The only thing that's used in the calculation for Fitday is your sex, age and weights. So changes in any of those in your profile should be the only thing that changes your basal...maybe it was just a glitch in the Fitday application.

                yeah maybe it was a glitch! Never mind I won't worry too much about that I'll just keep doing what I'm doing with Atkins and I'm sure it will all work out OK in the end!

                  Your weight, gender and age aren't all that far off from mine - so based on that, the 16** number looks to be the correct number NOT the 13** number.

                    So I should be aiming my calorie intake at 1600 and above?? I know we don't count the calories but I've read a few posts about eating too few calories slowing down the weight loss.

                    My fitday % have been around the 65/30/5 mark, occasional days have had more fat and less carbs, that's good tho isn't it? My average calories for this week have been 1602, with my fat average 74%, carbs 4% (19g) and protein 22%. Does this sound good to you?

                      Sounds good to me - I know personally, it seems like I lose better when I eat a little bit above BMR...some days, that's hard for me (who would have ever imagine that, right?) some days I can get up to 1850 without much effort. I think the key is only feeding your hunger and some days you will just be hungrier than others depending on activity and any number of things. I just don't let too many days in a row go by eating way under BMR...if that happens, I make a conscious effort to eat higher calorie foods for a day or two. I don't get too worked up if my fat is over 65% some days - I just try not to let it drop below that. Best wishes!!
