  • Communion

So at church on Sunday, come communion time, I was uhm unsure of what to do. I always take communion so I didn't NOT want to go. So I went up, got my piece of bread, dipped it in the wine, and cupped it with my hand and slyly hid it.

Funny part is that I _hate_ the bread they use at communion which is a very thick chewy wheat. However now they have switched it to a white honey and it looked good!

How's that for sticking to it!

      Re: Communion

My wife takes sacrement (her religion's version of communion) where she eats a bite of bread and a cup of water. It's an important part of her religious experience and is important enough to her that she would probably not do Atkins if it meant skipping it.

        Re: Communion

there are quite a few threads with discussion of this topic if you do a search on "communion."One of my favorite lines was one 2big used - it went something like this:

It won't do you any good to get to your goal weight if you are suffering from spiritual malnutrition when you get there.

Not a direct quote, but thought provoking, IMO. Obviously, this is a personal choice thing. I take communion and never give it another thought in terms of food-food or carbs.

Well said Kylie - It's not worth a second thought - and I think that by missing out on the gift of communion, you truly miss out on ALL that it symbolizes.

            Re: Communion

I'm not catholic, or very religious at all, but I do not believe that anyone should be skipping comunion or any religous offering that is similar, because of their woe. I agree with 2bigs sentiment.

Here is the count on one communion wafer:

            http://www.calorieking.com/foods/cal...1tdW5pb24.html

at .5 g's of carbs, even if they are from starch/flour etc, I don't think 1 bite of comunion wafer is not going to undo all you have done, or cause you to gain any weight or knock you out of ketosis.

Here is teh count for 'honey wheat bread':

            http://www.calorieking.com/foods/cal...0IGJyZWFk.html

3g's is 1.6 g's of carbs..i would imagine that a small bite would not be much more than this.

Can't you take just a tiny corner of it? The symbolism would be the same...
Sorry... I'm pretty clueless about comunion, so am probably talking rubbish.

                Re: Communion

Thanks all for the advice, I am glad I posted because it helped me to figure out what to do. It is important to me to take communion but I was feeling so good about doing well on the diet on Sunday. I totally forgot about communion until it was like there and then I hadn't had time to think or figure out what to do so it was more of a shock to me than anything.

Somebody posted 'honey wheat bread' as 1.6g carbs for a small piece .. let's just hope they don't break me off a HUGE chunk like they do every once in a while

                  Re: Communion

I read somewhere that the church often has a backup for those with allergies or whatnot that might be in the bread/wafer. Might ask about that.

                    Re: Communion

i have never even considered not taking communion (unleavened bread and fruit of the vine).

the carbs contained in those two things wouldn't amount to nothing and even if it did, i would have still taken it. the meaning of taking that is too important.
