  • The gram calculation is confusing!!!!!!!!HELP!!

    Hi Everyone

I have a question that I need to get answered. I live in the UK and labels on food may be alittle different from the US so can you tell me if the following is true

For example sake, a tin of tomato soup.
    Protein (whatever g)
    Fat (whatever g)
    Carbohydrate 11.00g
    (of which sugars) 4.00g

So does this mean that the net carbs is 7g ?

Our labels do not give any other details such as fibre grams to subtract.

Im just confused cause sometimes I see foods that are

    Carbohydrate 7g
    (of which sugars) 5g

and i think to my self, hmmm, is that net Carbs 2g?

Help, cause i'm probably avoiding foods that are ok for me.

I'm on day 8. Was on the plan a few years ago and lost loads of weight but i fell off the wagon and ate the horse! (Covered in naughty foods). So i'm back armed with the knowledge of my mistakes.

    Thanks for your help

No you can't subtract the sugar grams...they are some of the ones that really impact your blood sugar. Net carbs = Total carbs - Fiber carbs. If you don't know the fiber grams, I guess you could look it up using a nutritional program like www.fitday.com.

This would not be very helpful while you're actually shopping, though. You may have to use the total carbs as your net carbs. When it says 8 grams total carbs and 5 grams sugars then you may just have to say 8 grams net carbs to be on the safe side.

Maybe someone else from the UK can help you out more.

      Hi Neoband

As far as I'm aware UK labels already have the fibre subtracted so the carb count is the net carbs...having said that someone will probably come along and correct me! LOL

You definately don't subtract sugar carbs from the total...that would be BAD!!

I agree with Attek and Nixgirl. I live in Edinburgh and most food labels clearly state how many carbs and how much fibre each food has, which is what you should use to calculate your net carbs. In case this is not mentioned, just use the overall carb figure. I would advise you against canned soup though. It has lots of additives, sugar, preservatives, etc. If you are not bored cooking and you like soup, try to make a low-carb version of your own

The other posters are correct - in UK (and many other countries outside the USA) the 'total carbs including sugars and sugar alcohol/polyol' does not include the fibre, which is listed in a separate section of the nutrition label, meaning we dont have to do any maths to get our net carbs figure!!

BTW if you are entering the label info to make custom foods at www.fitday.com you will need to add the fibre carbs to the other carbs so fitday can add them in and show you the fibre carbs to deduct or fitday will throw a wobbly and refuse to accept your calories as being correct.

Another difference is that our labels give figures for 100 grams or 100 mls rather than for 'one serving' which is often deceptive as they can put it down as 0 carbs if it is less than one carb, and if you are having several 'servings' that mounts up quickly without you knowing.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
