  • Induction Question

First time poster, been a lurker for several weeks. I'm just completing my 2nd week of the Atkins Induction, I'm down 9 lbs. YEA!! I'm planning to continue with induction for maybe another 2 weeks but want to clarify a few things. I've read different answers to these questions on different boards but I'm going to trust you guys/gals.

I have a question about drinking water...does it have to be "straight" water or can you use Crystal Light?

When measuring serving size of vegetables, is the 1 cup allowed cooked or raw?

Is soymilk or alternate milk product allowed? I found 2 at the store that sounded good. Calorie Countdown-Cal 90, Fat 5g, Carb 5g, Dietary Fiber 1g, Protein 8 g. Soy Slender-Cal 70, Fat 3g, Carb 4g, Dietary Fiber 3g, Protein 7g. Both are sweetened with suralose (splenda brand).

I want to thank you all for your valuable information and for sharing your stories...you have no idea how much reading this board has helped me when I've wanted to stray.

    Re: Induction Question

Hi Kelloshy! Congrats on your loss so far, that's wonderful!

You need to get your "straight" water in, but you can have Crystal Light too. Just be sure to count the sweetener servings in it toward your daily carbs. Just be careful, sometimes the sweetener stalls weight loss.

The measuring is raw veggies. That's really important especially on things like onions and tomatoes that cook down quite a bit.

And I don't believe any milk product like that is allowed yet. I'm just starting so I haven't learned a lot about the rungs yet, but I'm pretty sure that will come later.

    Best of luck to you!

Congrats on your loss. You should check the charts in Chapter 12 of the book to see what your degree of metabolic resistance to weight loss is---that will help you plan your Atkins more effectively.

      As for your questions....

When you choose to extend your Induction phase, you still have to follow the Rules of Induction and the Induction Acceptable Foods list. So if it ain't on the list or doesn't follow the rules, then it's not appropriate for Induction, extended or not.

      re: Water and Crystal Light.
The only thing that counts as water is water----spring, tap, mineral or filtered. After you drink your daily minimum of 64 fluid ounces, you can drink the other beverages on the Foods List.

      re: Vegetable measurements.

The Foods List states that any veggie that cooks down 'significantly' must be measured raw. So tomatoes need to be measured raw then they can be cooked. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, string/green beans are some of the veggies that don't "cook down significantly" so you can measure them cooked, if you choose.

      Re: milk substitutes:

Nope. Carb Down (I think it's now called "Calorie Down") doesn't satisfy Induction Rule #4 and #5 because the only dairy you are allowed to eat during Induction is butter, cheese and cream and you can't eat anything that's not on the list.

Soy milk....Soy milk is made by grinding soybeans with water, then pressing the milky liquid from it. It still contains carbs. I would avoid it until OWL phase.

Also if you choose to use any of these sweetened products each serving that you use needs to be counted as one of the 3 artificial sweetener servings we are allowed to have daily. That 3 serving limit doesn't change from Induction to Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance Phase.
