  • Dumb question about squash

Is summer squash and yellow squash the same thing? I found a neat recipe for yellow squash that you cut up to be like pasta and would like to try it but I'm a newbie to the squash world. Google wasn't a definitive help either. Thanks!

    Re: Dumb question about squash

Yes, as long as the "yellow squash" you use looks like a "summer squash". I've seen some wacky labeling in the past. So be aware.

Here's a site with summer squash pictures:

      Re: Dumb question about squash

Thanks for the site - I wouldn't know what summer squash looks like. One additional question - is summer squash only found in the summer and if so, can I use winter squash? (Basically what is the likelihood I'd find it right now and that might help me sniff out the imposters!)

      Thanks again!

            Re: Dumb question about squash

It's called summer squash because it didn't store well over winter, unlike the winter squashes that can store almost indefinately in a cool, dry place.

Are all squashes created equally? No. Winter squash (acorn, butternut, etc.) have more fiber and more carbs. When you get to OWL Phase, you will be able to add them into your diet. Summer squashes, according to most carb counter books, have similar carb counts.
