  • Meat portion size?

Hi, Is there any restrictions on the quantitiy of meat consumed with a meal? The DANDR book mentions eating until satisifed...but a lot of recipes have noted meat portions around 6-8 ozs.I have easily eaten 14oz steaks and with the absence of potato I am concerned that a 6-8 oz portion will not be enough. Was wondering if I need to cut back on the portion size of the meat?
    Thanks.

It's all relative. The first rule is to eat until satisfied, but NOT STUFFED. Make sure you're feeding your hunger and not just trying to clean your plate. 14 oz. seems like a bit much, but then again, I don't know your age/height/weight or what else you've eaten with the steaks. It's important that you keep your percentages around 65% fat, 5% carbs, and 30% protein. Plug in a typical day's menu at www.fitday.com and see what your percentages are.

Remember, atkins is a HIGH-FAT diet, not high-protein. The majority of your calories (65%) should be coming from fat sources. Too much protein in the body will be converted to glucose, and will ultimately be stored as fat. Also, fat is what keeps you "satisfied" after a meal. Not eating enough will make you feel hungry and/or will not keep you full.

I would stick with the 6-8 ounce serving sizes from the recipe section. By the way, kudos to you for looking at the recipe chapters of the book to get an idea of "serving sizes": many people don't do that.

Be sure to eat your vegetables too and DO NOT solely eat lettuce!!!!!! It's the fiber from the vegetables that help to "fill you up" during your meals and it's the fat that will help you feel "full" between meals. So try to eat the veggies on the list that will give you about 2 grams of fiber per serving.
