  • I'm not happy with my induction so far

Does anyone know what Dr. Atkins said about people who have no weight loss during the induction phase? I've done everything by the book. What can you do about yeast overgrowth or hyper insulinism? I had my blood work checked recently and had no problems with thyroid. Oh, I didn't measure, but my pants fit the same as prior to induction. I'm sad.

Some people don't lose during induction, but as soon as they move on, they lose all kinds of weight. Are you making sure that you are taking your vitamins as described in the book and are you exercising your minimum of 30 minutes a day. Either of those things, or lack of water consumption, could prevent weight loss.

Yes, I'm exercising at least 30 mins. a day except for Sunday. I'm taking one centrum silver (for seniors), fish oil, ALA, Chromium picolinate, and L-Carnitine.
I was wondering if I should stay on induction for an extended period.

We need more info. How much do you weigh? How much do you plan to lose?

See, during Induction we can expect to lose 5-10% of the weight we need/want to lose. Therefore a person with a 10 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose about 1/2 to 1 pound. A person with a 100 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose about 5 to 10 pounds.

I weight 220 and want to lose 50. I'm 5'9" and 54 years old and have a large frame. I was always slender until I had a hysterectomy in 2002.

Have you talked to your doctor about this diet? I wonder what medications you are taking as well. Some of them cause weight gain, even some of the depression medications. I think there COULD be a medical reason. If you have not spoken to a doctor, I hope you would. I'm not saying there is, just rule out any medical problems, and medications. If everything is fine, and I pray it is, then you will drop the pounds in time. Since you have been in recently for a thyroid check, maybe just a quick call to the nurse at least so the doctor knows what your doing and the lack of results. He may order some more tests, or not. Listen to me, I'm a bit paranoid but I want you to be cautious and safe. Best of wishes. Heidi!

Thanks, for your concern, but I don't have any real physical problems other than the usual when you're obese, high cholesterol and hiatal hernia. And I medicate for these with Lipitor and Nexium. Other than that I take one 325 mg aspirin because I had a brain anuerism fixed last year and the aspirin prevents clots.
I just wish I could lose some weight cause that would raise my spirits so much. I must say I'm a little vain when it comes to my looks and success on this program would mean so much to me.

Re: I'm not happy with my induction so far

Wow, you have been throuh a lot! Your body has gone through so many things in the past five years or so. I know what 220lbs feels like, I was there at one point in my life. I have NO doubt you can do this and have great results with time. You know, if your anything like me, I just cant loose fast enough. It's hard to stay encouraged even with a weight loss. I have had results in the five days, but it's just not good enough for me. I'm sure it would be for others, but we are always our own worst critic I find. I have friends of many weights, and even with strangers I find 220lbs beautiful. Even larger somethimes too. I think a woman with curves is beautiful, but on me...I felt so bad about myself and depressed. You want to know what I did when I hit a 10lb weight loss? I'm so ashamed to admit, but this is true. I went on a binge. I wont even share what I ate, because I don't want things to come to mind but it was bad. Why? Because I lost 10lbs, and for 1 day, I didn't loose. 1 day!! Can you believe that. Then, I had to pick myself up again, and I did good today. I hope you wont feel discouraged, but feel hope in that if you continue, it will work. But also know, there may be a time of no loss too and just know it will pass and be patient with yourself.

                  Best wishes, Heidi

I think that if you don't lose any weight during induction, you can do the fat fast for a couple of days. It's in DANDR, but I loaned my book to someone so I can't look up the specifics, but it's supposed to help people with high metabolic resistance.

Maybe reading Chapter 20, Metabolic Resistance: Causes and Solutions will give you some solutions?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thank you all very much. I'm gonna continue on and read as much as I can about metabolic resistance.

Do you know what your thyroid test numbers were? I just emerged from a round with my doc...a lot of the labs use outdated ranges, and the docs just look at the results, say "normal" and don't go any further.

I think the advice about having your menu reviewed would help. I'm older than you and we're about at the same place with our weight, and like you, I'm having a hard time with the weight I gained.

I gained most of mine in the past year after an allergic reaction to prednesone (and quitting smoking at the same time) so I understand what you're going through. Did your weight level out before you started the diet?

Perhaps if you shake up what you are eating and make ABSOLUTELY sure you haven't dropped below 1200 calories.
