    Hi

My 15 year old daugher started induction, 1 week after me, and she is really having a hard time. I am doing an extended induction, so I can help her that way. She only posted once on the teen board.

She hates the diet. She lost a few pounds but that doesn't seem to encourage her to go on. She's mostly a fruit and veggie kind of girl.

I tend to not care what I eat. I'm too busy. I just eat it cuz I have too.

Any ideas. I hate to see her give up. I'm a size smaller than her, and it really bothers me cuz I know it hurts her.

She needs to loose at least 25 pounds.

We need some new recipes. Does her 3 cups of veggies have to be 2 cups of salad everyday. Can you change that sometimes. Should I move her out of induction early. She is craving buns for her hamburger, etc...

    Thank you

    Re: Dieting daughter

It does need to be at least two cups from the salad veggies list, but while the book refers to them as "salad veggies" you may not. They are definately not just lettuce and most of them you can easily make part of a main dish, or on their own as a snack food, rather then as a salad.
    Here's the list:

    alfalfa sprouts
    daikon
    mushrooms
    arugula
    endive
    parsley
    bok choy
    escarole
    peppers
    celery
    fennel
    radichhio
    chicory
    jicama
    radishes
    chives
    lettuce
    romaine lettuce
    cucumber
    mache
    sorrel.

      Re: Dieting daughter

I suggest you read a book called Feed Your Kids Well by Fred Pescatore MD. Dr. Pescatore was the Assistant Medical Director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s. That book outlines the Atkins Center's diet for children and teens. Remember, your 15 year old's nutritional needs are different than ours. And that books gives a more nutritionally balanced diet for her age group, than Atkins.

        Hi Grant

I have the list in my book.

What do you think about going off induction early?

Personally I'd be against going off induction early. A proper induction is so important for resetting your body and your mind.

To be honest Merryjo I am a bit worried about the way you asked your original question, you said "Should I move her out of induction early?" In my opinion this HAS to be her choice. I realize you don't want your daughter to fail at this but the fact is, even though she is your child, she needs to be the one that wants this bad enough to make it work. 2 weeks is just 2 weeks, if she isn't ready and even eager for this then I just don't see it working for the rest of her life.

            Re: Dieting daughter

You're right Grant. That's exactly what I told her last night. It's the same thing I tell my husband about him and his smoking. He can't quit cuz he doesn't really want to. I just weaned myself from a huge coffee addiction. I thought about it for years. I did it when I really wanted to.

It is her choice, I just hope she makes the right one.

Thanks Grant. You're a nice guy.

Megs, I will purchase the book, but I don't think she will do anything she doesn't want to. Maybe he allows for extra carbs tho and more dairy.

              Thanks

That's true, she won't do it unless she wants to. But Dr. Pescatore's diet is less 'strict' (allows more carbs and a greater variety of food) and perhaps she will be more accepting of it.

You might also want to be the 'sneaky' parent. That is, get her involved with your diet. For example, drag her along as your exercise buddy by walking, hiking or riding bikes with her. As long as you don't present this as a "I'm forcing you to exercise" thing, she'll probably go along with it. Plus you'll get to spent some quality mother-daughter time during this, that she'll appreciate when she gets older.

I made her a really nice steak and Jicama fries today for lunch. I would have been happy with a can of tuna...

She does exercise, alot. We used to bike ride 11 miles almost every day.

It's hard for me to get out. My youngest is special needs, and plain old special too. I have a home business.

Today my daughter is happy cuz she has lost 11 pounds so far. Not all on Atkins. Maybe she will stick with it after all. I'm going to cook better for her.

That makes 3 different meals, cuz my youngest has horrendous allergies.
                  Thanks!

                    Re: Dieting daughter

I can sympathize with you Maryjo, I have a 12 1/2 year old daughter who has now passed me up weight wise. I try to get her to eat better unfortunately her weight just keeps going up. I actually think I am now sabotoging my own eating because I am feeling so bad seeing her surpass me in weight. Good luck with your daughter, I am gonna try to keep up with this tread it may help me along the way with my own. I am also going to try to pick up that book Megs suggested (checked the library already and they don't carry it).

                      Re: Dieting daughter

I'm also going to look for that book. My 13yr old has diabetes like me and her endocrynologist is all aboard for her doing LC. I was thinking of more maintenance level atkins or reading Atkins Diabetes Revolution. I bought it when it first came out, but haven't read much of it yet. lol I'd like to read about a few options before really deciding. Both of my girls eat fairly LC anyway because of what I fix. They do eat some higher carb stuff at school lunch though.

That makes 3 different meals, cuz my youngest has horrendous allergies.
Why three? Couldn't you make a main dish and a few different sides to accomodate everyone? I don't know about your son's allergies, but if your daughter is doing LC, even if it's a different plan, I would think she would still eat many of the same things you do. I just hate to picture you fixing 3 different meals every day! lol

If the majority of the family has soup or spaghetti or bbq chicken, i really can't have that. My youngest has an extremely strict diet. If he eats the wrong foods, he'll have seizures. His diet is very limited.

merryjo, Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore Maryland is conducting a study about childhood seizure disorder and ketogenic diets. In fact a couple of years ago, the medical director posted a thread at ADBB looking for potential patients for the study. You might want to consult your son's pediatrician about this study.

We have been to many universities and hospitals, in and out of our state, My son does not respond to meds, and the diet is horrible, we were on it. It is extremely unhealthy. They allow nutrasweet, which causes seizures! We have found the seizures to be from allergies, food and environment. We have come a very long way and are making huge progress. we have even been able to add some foods back into his diet. We are finally on the right road.

Thanks for being so caring though.
