  • uhhh.... severe constipation...

Hi, this is kind of an embarrassing subject but I don't know what else I can do. Here's some history. I have been VERY constipated my entire life, even since infanthood. I am on day 11 of induction. Let me just say that since I've had children (3 1/2 years ago), I have had it even worse. 90% of the time I cannot even go without the help of a laxative. I tried to stop taking them once and I went 10 days without going! I was in so much pain that I had to take them again. I went to the doctor and the idiot told me..... "eat fiber, drink water, and use laxatives if you need to." Gee, thanks a lot. I already eat plenty of fiber, plus supplements, drink 100 oz + per day.

Here's my immediate problem. I have not gone in 7 days. 2 days ago, I tried a my normal stimulent laxative (Correctol) which is normally very effective. NOTHING happened. I took them again the next day, NOTHING happened. This morning, I broke out the ol' Fleet Enema, and nothing came out except clear fluids from the enema. Panicked, I brought out the 2 quart enema bag, and used a home-made recipe for a mineral oil enema. I took almost the whole 2 quarts, and NOTHING came out except clear liquid. No stool whatsoever. I'm starting to freak out. Is there no relief? Has anyone else had constipation this severe??

Before anyone suggests it, yes, I've eaten 2 T of flax every day while on induction, yes, I also take my psyllium every day, and yes, I'm eating all my veggies, and yes, I drink 100+ oz of water per day.

    Re: uhhh.... severe constipation...

Have you tried going for a walk or taking a hot bath?

Don't know much else to tell you for the short term, but for long term I think you might want to go to a different doctor, some kind of specialist. If you've been taking laxatives your entire life, then you've trained your body not to go without them. Recovering Bulemics, for example, struggle with the same problem if they have used laxatives for purging for a long period of time. It sounds like you have a physical dependance on laxatives, and you need more help than you can get from your "idiot" doctor who doesn't seem to understand the severity of the problem.

I hope someone else can give you more helpful advice. You must feel soooo miserable!

    Feel better soon.

You should google Dr. Schulze. His Intestinal formula # 1 is incredible. It won't hurt your body like laxatives will. It actually will help strengthen your colon muscles.

I am thinking you may need to contact your doctor. This sounds kind of serious. You seem to be doing everything you should to prevent and remedy constipation. I dont know what else you could do other than to contact your physician. Good Luck!

          Hi!

I do think you should see a doctor, I don't know if your original doctor would be of any help.

I suffer from constipation too. I find that if I have too much fiber I get plugged up as well. It is a delicate balance! Maybe talk to your doctor to see if you are getting to much too. Flax seeds and psyllium is a lot of fiber!

Good luck girl. Let us know what happens!

Thanks for everyone's replies. I just called my doctor and I have an appointment tomorrow morning. I was starting to panic and feeling like I'm never gonna poop again!

If nothing else is working, you might want to ask your doc for a referral to a specialist (gastroenterologist?). If he declines, you may have to be very persistent. Just saying this because I know my MIL's doctor is like that.

My MIL, like you, has had a lifetime problem of constipation. She takes laxatives a lot, and I don't think that's the best solution. Her doctor gave her useless remedies, so she is always taking laxatives. I asked her to request a specialist from her doc, but she never did.

                  Re: uhhh.... severe constipation...(updated!)

Hi all. I went to the doctor today. Looks like I'll have to give up this WOE for a little while. My dr (a different, more compassionate one!), gave me THREE prescription laxatives. (Prescription strength suppositories, prescription strength hospital enema, and Enulose, which is the stuff they give you to clean you out for a colonoscopy). NONE of which have worked yet!! Still no BM in like 8 days or something! She felt my belly, did an uncomfortable "internal" exam, and sent me for an X-ray of my abdomen. Still haven't heard about the results yet. But she said if I am not able to produce a BM over the weekend, most likely I have an obstruction and I may need surgery!!! I have an ultrasound of my abdomen scheduled Monday to check for anything that might be physically causing my chronic constipation. And I have been given a referral to a gastroenterologist who will perform a colonoscopy!!! (I am only 29!!) But anyway, all that aside, once I finally am able to "evacuate", my new doc is putting me on a strict daily regimin until I can "retrain" my bowels and get away from using laxatives. Unfortunately, it does not fit in with the Atkins WOE.

                  - Colace - 100mg 2xday
                  - Senna - 2-3 pills every night
                  - Hot Apple juice w/ a pat of butter every night
                  - Lots of prunes, dried figs, and dried apricots
                  - Bran cereal every morning
                  - 1 (doctor's recipe) for bran muffin once a day
                  - Lots of Water

Since getting my digestive system healthy is my first priority right now, and since my weight & BMI is currently in the normal range, I'm just going to have to put off the rest of my vanity weight loss and Atkins WOE. This WOE has been good to me in the past and helped me go from "obese", to "overweight", to currently "normal" BMI. I know I am healthier now even though my lifelong battle with chronic constipation is catching up to me. I'll keep everyone posted!

                      Hey good luck with things.

Yes your priority now is to 'get things moving' and like you said..retrain things.
Get that all sorted then you can back to what you want to do with Atkins, hopefully.

Take care and keep us posted.

                            UPDATE!!!

Hi everyone! Just an update. The fiber (psyllium & flax), suppositories, enemas, Enulose and regular laxatives did NOTHING to unplug me!! Desperate, I contacted the doctor who was on call Saturday night. He suggested Magnesium Citrate. I had never heard of it before, but nothing else worked so I gave it a shot. $1.99 at the drug store.... comes in lime, cherry, or grape flavor and you're supposed to drink the whole bottle. Tastes like Satan himself urinated in a bottle. But OH MY GOSH!!! It worked to unplug me like nothing I have ever seen in my life! I think the steak I ate in 1995 came out too! I was on the pot from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am every 10 minutes, but I feel so much better!!!!

So my suggestion to anyone who is ever so constipated that nothing else seems to work, it's time to pull out the heavy artillery. Get yourself a bottle of Magnesium Citrate. Your colon will thank you!!! But I highly suggest preparing yourself with some baby wipes, some Preparation H, plenty of TP, and at least a 12 hour period to devote yourself to cleaning yourself out.

Anyway, I should be getting a colonoscopy soon to find out if there's a reason I've been plagued by this my entire life, but in the short term, at least that ordeal is over. Thanks for all the support. I hope to be back to this WOE soon as I can.

Oh, and if you want a good laugh, read this article I found while googling Magnesium Citrate. I was laughing so hard!
