  • Smoked Salmon??

    Hello,

I was thinking of trying out smoked salmon because I saw some good snack suggestions on this site. Problem is I have no idea what is taste like. I don't want to waste my money if it is yucky. Can anyone give me their thoughts on it? What is it compared to?

    Thanks again,

    Kelly

    Re: Smoked Salmon??

I'm probably the one person in the world who doesn't like salmon...most people go ga-ga for it. To me it tastes too fishy and too oily, and altogether too rich/intense. I prefer white and flaky stuff like halibut.

Hopefully someone will be through to give you some "pros" of the taste of salmon!

Okay thank you for your reply. I wasn't sure if it tasted like regular cooked salmon.

        Re: Smoked Salmon??

Kind of have to define what you are talking about, cold smoked salmon (also known as Lox) is nasty in my opionion. Heat smoked salmon is delicious and really doesn't taste like normal Salmon. It's expensive but definately worth trying.

I tried to think of something to compare it to but really can't unless you've had other smoked foods before. The smoking process gives it a rich flavor that changes depending on what type wood they used.

Yeah I was thinking of the cold smoked salmon. I wasn't sure if it was raw or what. It doesn't look that good, but looks can be decieving. Thanks for the reply.

It's good rolled up with cream cheese. I guess there is no way to describe it. I rinse mine before I do anything with it. I also like to chop it up in scrambled eggs for breakfast. Try it, you'll like it, if not, give it to your Rottie, he WILL love it.

              Re: Smoked Salmon??

I love smoked salmon...don't know the difference between smoke and heat smoke though. Probably because I buy the same brand/package, and never checked it...but now I am curious and will check the next one.

In the past I've made low carb "sushi": cream cheese, smoked salmon and the roasted sushi parchment (sorry forgot what it's called ).

I've had smoked salmon by itself, but found it way too salty-tasting alone. The cream cheese really balances that out.

Try rolling cold Smoked salmon ( cut wafer thin) round cream cheese

and then sprinkle with different spices on each one , black pepper

cayenne etc etc .Tastes like I hope heaven will taste

I love Salmon. In can, on sea or land, you can call me a salmon man. I'm stoked for smoked, and thrilled for grilled.

                  lol

Anyway, yeah, there's some other "smoked" variety that isn't like "Lox" (which I love)

In looking for a picture they call it "Northwestern Style Smoked", is just means it's fully cooked and it's flaky and moist. They sell it at Giant Foods and Shoppers in my area.

                    Re: Smoked Salmon??

I was actually thinking the same thing last night, about wanting to try Lox. (I had cream cheese on celery and was thinking of ways to add protein). My husband looked it up, and it is raw. The cold smoking doesn't cook it.

I'm thinking of trying it anyway (maybe it is like sushi?), and maybe the hot-smoked as well.

Spence & Co. Smoked Salmon Petit Fours

If you just want to dip your toe in the pool of smoked salmon, petit fours are something you can find at high-end supermarkets and the larger health food stores. I have these for a snack all the time.
