  • anyone else get confused?

does anyone else get confused about what they can and shouldnt have, etc? i have the book, have read the book, have reread the book, and it says i can have certain things, then i see on here i cant have those things, then i go to the atkins site and see something different....how do you know what to listen to? i read constantly that there is nothing sweet during induction here, but in the book, totally different..in the sample menu they have sugarfree sucralose jello, but then you read somewhere else you cant have it...also in the books sample menu, you can have atkins shakes and such....i am getting so confused...how do you know what to do, and if you are doing it RIGHT?

    thanks...

    Re: anyone else get confused?

The best thing that you can do is stick to the acceptable foods list. Stay away from the shakes and bars because they stall many people. The reason it's advised to avoid sweets during induction is to break the cravings. If you feed your sweet tooth, it won't go away. That being said, it is better to eat SF jello or something else induction friendly as opposed to candy or whatever. Just keep in mind that if you do eat jello and you're having problems losing that you should cut it out of your diet and see if that helps. I wouldn't pay much attention to the Atkins site. They've changed things since Dr. Atkins died and most are NOT changes for the good. They just want your money. I hope that helps clear some things up.

      somewhat.....

i just get so bombarded feeling sometimes..like the book says i can have soy flour pancakes and gives the recipe, on the induction menu, then i read that you cant have it till OWL...i feel like i never know what i am doing..fortunately the sweet tooth thing has passed, i never was one for sweets too much..i would rather have chicken or something....but i read that we CAN have parmesan cheese, then read i cant, then wasnt sure what to do....i think maybe finding an older version of the book would be best, no? this new book is confusing to me.....very.....

      thanks..

        Re: anyone else get confused?

I hear ya! I have a tendency to get confused too, by the same issues. Do you have the red copy 2002 edition of DANDR? If I'm not mistaken, I think that is the one most people go by. Not sure. Whenever there is a question in my mind,(and when isn't there? Hmm.) I just stay away from anything that isn't a whole, unprocessed food just to be safe. I know that the shakes and bars cause stalls for some people. and since this is my second time around, I figured I just wouldn't use them except in emergencies. You can always have that stuff later on OWL when you are adding things in slowly. I'll bet a lot of people have done just fine with sugar free jello, but I can't stand the thought of a little package of chemicals and dye! Eeeww. So even though I am not exactly an expert at this sort of thing, I would just say stay away from anything fake or processed unless you have no alternatives and get stuck with nothing else to eat.

          Re: anyone else get confused?

In Chapter 11, the Induction Acceptable Foods List state:
          4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

          5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.
So if a recipe says "Induction okay" but it contains soy flour. The rule say no legumes. Soy is a legume. The rules also say "eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list". Is soy flour on the foods list? If it isn't then the Rules say don't eat it.

Parmesan cheese is an aged cheese. So, yes you can have that. Gelatin sweetened with Sucralose is allowed, "Jello" brand gelatin is usually sweetened with aspartame. Aspartame is discouraged.

              Re: anyone else get confused?

i get that....and i havent eaten anything not on the list, even if the book says it is ok..i am just saying that the book says one thing, then shows another, and makes it confusing...i think i should not have bought the book, at least this version...cause how can you say no legumes, then say you can have soy pancakes?

i think i will just not read the new book, and find an older version..

it was so much easier to pile food in my mouth then to eat properly..

good thing i found this place..who knows what i would have put into my body...phew

                Re: anyone else get confused?

                Keep the new version.

Remember the rules Megs posted: IF IT'S NOT ON THE INDUCTION FOODS LIST, DON'T EAT IT. Make sure to check ingredients of all foods you put in your mouth. If there is an ingredient that is NOT ACCEPTABLE, do not eat it. It doesn't matter what the company website says, what the wrappers on the atkins bars say, or what the recipes say. If you know an ingredient/food is not on the list, don't eat it.

                  Re: anyone else get confused?

I like to carry the pocket version of the acceptable food list in my purse. There is a printable page listed in the induction forums somewhere. Even tho I am OWL, I still refer to the induction list not adding too much more to it. It seems to be healthier.
                  Good luck!

Those "sample menues" are only good for 2 things:
                    1. It gives you an idea of what your Atkins meals can be like.
                    2. It gives you an idea of "normal" portion sizes for Atkins meals.

                      Re: anyone else get confused?

What if we've already eaten something not on the list? I had nuts during induction because I didn't check the list, and had mis-remembered them being on it (thought they were in with olives and cheese - OK if limited). Even if you stop, what sorts of problems does that cause with induction if you've done something like that? Do other problems surface after induction? Do you need to start counting over from the begining?

Just correct things and keep going. No starting over, no re-doing...just keep going.

This is like a road trip. Every time you get off the main road for something, you don't go back to where you started, you just get back on the road and keep going.

                          Re: anyone else get confused?

I agree wiht Joy djay, no need for a do over, just get back on the wagon and keep going. And surreys princess, don't let frustration get in the way of your goals. The best idea at all times is to eat foods that are as close to their original god made form. Especially durring induction. Fresh is the best form of food. Keep in mind that even though a package says net 3 carbs for example, it may have sugar alcohols in it. Alcohol in any form is a fuel and your body will burn whatever is easiest to burn first. Alcohol and sugar are easier to burn that fat. So if there are sugars or alcohol in a pre packaged food (which there usually are) then your body will burn those before it burns your fat stores. Also sweeteners are usually a form of super processed chemicals bound together with water retaining other chemicals and can cause you to hold extra water weight. Not everyone is sensitive to them, but many people are, and that is why you are getting so many conflicting "rules". The best rules to follow are the ones in the front of the book where Dr.A clearly lists what you can eat. The menu's in his book are contradictory with those lists. But you will notice that the soy flour in the pancakes, are atkins bake mix. That shows that the CORPORATION Atkins is selling you a product. If you want to know for sure what you are eating, make it yourself, avoid packages. And if you want to really give yourself a good head start in this way of life, than follow the list and only the list.

Just a little ananlogy before I get off of this thread is this.

When someone draws a line in the sand and says do not cross this line or you will regret it. The best thing is to not get even close to the line. You may trip and fall over the line, or get pushed over it by external circumstances. But if you are as far away from the line as you can get, you are not in jeapordy of crossing it.

This way of eating doesn't have to be boring, ask for recipes and check out other members menues for ideas. Good luck in your low carb way of life! Sorry this is a long post, but lately it seems I have a lot to say! LOL
