  • I feel stoopid....

I've been on Atkins for the last ten days and I've only lost FIVE lbs. Althought the ketostix are still turning anywhere from "Trace" to the second or third pinky-purple stage. I also have lost a total of 3 inches (from my upper thighs and upper arms). My jeans are a tiny bit looser.

Today I feel like the Induction flu is back. I've been listless all day, mostly sleeping and/ or lethargic. I cant concentrate at all. Lucky for me that I work at home.

When I did this diet back in 1999 I ate practically unlimited amount of salami and cheese, drank loads of diet Dr Pepper and may have even had a few berries occasionally during Induction. And I lost 15 lbs in the 2 week period. Maybe eight years makes a difference.

I've done some good things including reading the book. Below I've outlined the good and the bad. What do y'all think? Please go easy on me... Swan

    Good stuff:
    • Have 3 scrambled eggs and 2-3 pieces of nitrate-free bacon for breakfast.
    • Lunch is typically egg salad, chicken or tuna salad made with Duke's 0 carb mayo and very little else. I typically have this "taco style" in a romaine lettuce leaf. Also lots of burgers.
    • Have begun to do the aerobics program on my treadmill 3x/week (am shooting for more).
    • Dinner is always, always some grilled protein with a salad. Not one drop of alcohol, bread or refined sugar.
    • Keepin' the cheese in check- no more than 4oz per day.
    Potential bad stuff
    • I HAVE to lay off the Endulge bars. I've taken a real fancy to them and have two yesterday. I know this cant be helping.
    • I have had 4-5 cans of the Waist Watchers aspartame soda each day.
    • I'm on birthcontrol pills and am thinkiing of stopping. I actually take them for a reason OTHER than birthcontrol so shouldnt be a big deal.
    • May not be drinking enough water (6-8 glasses + soda per day).

Meant to say "ASPRTAME-FREE SODA". Waist Watchers is made with Splenda.

      Hi Swan,
I would not eat the ATKINS bars at all. Esp. on Induction. They're not allowed. I gained my second week because I was eating them. They're very tasty I know They also made me have a lot of cravings. Splenda you are limited to 2-3 servings a day so you are going over that too with the soda. Keep trying sweetie. It really works. The bars are EVIL though!!! I had induction flu for two LONG weeks. I never thought it would end, but it did. Hang in there

          Re: I feel stoopid....

Thanks, Nicole! I thought I would at least drop 10 lbs - so the 5lbs are a little disappointing. The good thing is, instead of pouring myself a big glass of milk, and eating too many cookies, I'm trying to see where I've slipped and plan to improve. I consider that to be progress unto itself. The "old" me would have drowned my sorrows in carbs.

I was led astray by the confusing bit in the DANDR (bottom of page 129) that makes it sound like Atkins products are OK in moderation. I'll just assume that they are probably best for maintenance.

          Gracias,
          Swan

I think that you are positively handling the situation. Hopefully I will be that strong if/when I get discouraged.

Hey, at least it's 5 pounds in the right direction!

                Re: I feel stoopid....

Tswan, all of your "potential" bad thing aren't potential, but real. Also, I think you're not eating nearly enough vegetables. Even in induction you should be having 2 cups of "salad" vegetables off of the acceptable list, as well as one full cup of "other" veggie.

Set a goal for yourself to do a very clean induction, no bars, no soda, BCP's you can't help. Up the veggie and water intake and you will not only feel better, you will start losing again.

                  Re: I feel stoopid....

Ditto the advice! Those bars are EVIL...EVIL I say! They contain ingredients not suitable for induction, and oh boy, they're like glorified candy bars. Eat one and you want another one 10 minutes later.

Eat some more veggies, cut out the soda and bars, and eat when hungry. I think you've made a huge improvement this time around because you're READING THE BOOK. It's so crucial to success! It's better to do it right and keep the weight off than do it quickly and gain all of the weight back (like I did )

5 pounds is awesome! Keep it up!

                    Re: I feel stoopid....

Thanks everyone. Last night I went to bad, feeling very CRANKY. I thought "that's it! I'm having a bowl of cereal tomorrow and just putting this diet to bed." After I stewed on that I realize it's not the diet's fault.

The good thing about this recent "Indie-Flu" as I'm calling it is that when I look at the cans of soda and the boxes of bars I feel queasy. I was really in bad shape yesterday. I taped a note to the box of bars that says "DON'T DO IT!!!!"

I woke up today, had eggs, bacon, two big glasses of water, read the paper and then did 3 miles of hard treadmill work.

Now my dear husband is about to steam crab clusters which I'll have with drawn butter. YAY!

Everytime I finish a work out - it took about 45 minutes to do a steep 3miles - I think "why don't I do that every day?" I feel so good right now, ready to tackle the world.

oh crab clusters...now I remember why I REALLY love this diet. rofl

Glad you are feeling better and empowered to get on with it. Don't give up because then you will be kicking yourself all over again. Give up the product aides...they will only slow you down. The best part of this plan according to Dr. Atkins is that you don't need those "Diet" products and he doesn't recommend them at all. They are just a hook/gimmick/crutch ya get it? lol

                      Good luck~
