  • Struggling - one week in - need strength

    Hi there,
Week one has passed and I am down five full pounds which is great.
BUT I am exhausted, a bit lithless and am struggling with NOT going on a carb binge.

I did swell on Easter - a party of nine - and was amazed at my perseverence. Each table setting had an Easter basket filled with candy, we had prime rib which was perfect for the diet. I passed on the mashed potatoes, popovers, had only a few green beans (made w/ brown sugar, pearl onions) and also passed on the carrot cake for dessert. I filled my wine glass with water and had coffee while others had dessert.

So, today -I am wiped out - and am just struggling to keep the willpower and strength. I have much more weight to lose and just don't want to fail again.

Where, oh, where have you all found your strength to keep on course when it just feels so hard?

My appreciation for everyone on these boards is immense........

    Thank you -

Re: Struggling - one week in - need strength

I am so new here and just started the program...so I know others will have some wonderful advise and motivation for you....but I did want to say that I am thinking of you and know you can do it.....stay focused on really changing your life...and you know what not sure if it will help...but on March 27th I gave up smoking...had smoked for 20+ years and never thought I would be able to quit....one of the things I did/continue to do is I simply do not make it ok for myself....I am not A SMOKER....therefore it is not an option.....just food for thought!!
    big hugs,

Thank you Tammy. This is what I love about these boards - we are all struggling and can find acceptance and assurance from complete strangers - all because we have commonalities.

Good luck with your struggles with cigarettes! I smoked for more than twenty years myself and am now one of those smokers most people hate! (I can smoke like a fiend during a night of cocktails and then not again for months)

I also have to keep in perspective my T-O-M is approaching - and my addiction for sweets is my devil!

      Have a tremendous day...........

Re: Struggling - one week in - need strength

you will find the strength to do this when you stop and think about how listless and unenergetic you feel when you weigh too much. that does it for me. when i am overweight, i have no stamina, no energy and i am flat out unhappy.

congrats on getting thru the infamous easter basket treat laden dinner! you did great. you have already lost 5pounds!! that is wonderful. set a tiny goal, a treat for yourself. i tackle my weight in 5 pound increments....do what works for you. eat up, just eat the things you are supposed to eat. that will give you energy. get out and walk and get some fresh air. look at the cute spring fashions in the magazines...get a pretty pedicure....do something that you like and that will energize you,,,and read, read, read the board....the folks here are the greatest

you can do this!!! YOU ARE SO WORTH IT!!! there,,,,,did that motivate ya!!!

Re: Struggling - one week in - need strength

Well, I am an optimist at heart, but sometimes you just gotta say not being able to eat anything I want just plain sucks! AND...I truly understand that, as I am one who has a very unforgiving body when it comes to cheating with food. With that being said, when I am feeling sad that I can't eat as others do, I remind myself that protecting my health is soooo important. Cause my health is a gift. Once I lose that, I may not ever regain it. And everytime I make choices that build into the importance of that, I gain strength. I feel better about me! I have more energy! I am strong and courageous. Just keep eating healthy and the changes you will experience in your body will make you want to continue. And I promise you, if you keep eating as this program tells you to, you will transform your body. I am amazed at the way my body has responded. It is phenomenal. I would never have believed in a million years that I would have been able to regain the figure that I have. Even at 40, well, 37 is when I started this WOE. I have to admit, that for me, the desire to have the carbs will NEVER go away. I love that stuff! All of it. But I must decide that I will control my body, it won't control me. One of my favorite quotes is this, "To exist within a body is a magnificent gift from God, being fit honors the sacredness of that gift!" Hang in there sister and post here as often as possible to gather encouragement from all of us here!

Re: Struggling - one week in - need strength

              Thanks for your kind words.

So, feeling blue - I went out, filled up my gas tank and shopped for a new pair of shoes! I also went to the grocery store and loaded up with jicama, spinach, mushrooms, avocadoes and other foods that will help me keep on track. I also picked up some cream cheese to go in my celery!

Keeping the frig stocked w/ healthful foods is a help, even though my other half has candy "hidden" around the house. I said "just keep it out of my line of vision" and that seems to be helpful.

I think the tiredness is something I am hoping will go away -

I so look forward to being six weeks into this program - I feel when I can see some physical difference, it will make it so much easier.

Thanks again everyone for kindness and support. It truly helps.

Abacus... you did great to get through Easter unscathed! Good for you! And, you know something.... it just gets easier and easier as you go along!
If you're still feeling wiped out it's probably because you're still having a bit of induction flu. That'll pass and you'll feel great.

Congrats on your loss so far... hang in there, you so can do this!

Re: Struggling - one week in - need strength

I am only 3 days into induction and yesterday I had a tiny want for some sugar free candy (knwing I couldn't have the real stuff)- I didn't really want to give in to that because I have heard that it can stall any weight loss- what I did was take about an ounce of cream cheese and put some cinnamon in it- I ate it so slow and that seemed to calm me down! It's not a chocolate bar or a bag of doritos, but it sure was tasty!

My friend Krystal is on her second time around with Atkins - she lost 80 pounds and maintained for a year then got pregnant and went off the diet (I guess she though she could) she gained back 100 pounds!!! her first time around she got a carb craving that was so bad that she felt that she was going to attack a woman that was standing in line in front of her, for a piece of pie!!! My point is that she told me that one thing you can get away with during induction is the occasional tea spoon of all natural peanut butter. savour that teaspoon and the cravings with go away! It must be the protein and the taste of the roasted peanuts. I also have another Atkins book that lists celery and peanut butter as an acceptable induction food. It has to be all natural, because all the rest have icing sugar or other sugars.

Good luck- you can get through this!
