  • Low budget Help

    Hello,

I have a really low budget the next few days. My sisters bridle shower is this weekend and I am paying for it. Any ideas of what I can get at the store that won't leave me bored, but are really, really cheap?

    All help is appreciated

    Kelly

Check out your local grocery stores for chicken leg quarters. Sometimes we can get a 10 lb bag as cheap as .39 per pound (3.90)

10 lbs of chicken will go a looooong way.

Thank you so much Joy for that tip. I will check that out tonight. I think I am going to switch from shopping at Giant to either Karns or Walmart. Giant seems to have the highest prices now a days.

Here in Florida, walmart is the highest priced. I mean...INSANE. They had steak the other night for over $8 a pound...for SIRLOIN. That's just crazy. Yet, I can go to Sam's Club and get a MUCH better cut of sirloin for just over $4 per pound.

Watch the mid-size grocery stores that are in some of the less affluent neighborhoods sometimes. They'll have great cuts of meat for a LOT cheaper. Here in Florida there is U-Save and Save a Lot. They typically will have the $.39/lb bags of chicken, whereas the nicer stores like Publix or Albertsons are far more expensive. (And they don't make you use their stupid "club cards").

            Re: Low budget Help

I have no idea if there are any fruit stands are farmers markets near you, but those are always cheaper for me than the regular grocery store for produce.

Like joy said, chicken legs and thighs are sometimes really cheap. Otherwise, just check the sale papers, find out what you can get a deal on. Sometimes meat will go on sale if it's getting close to it's sell by date. It doesn't mean it's bad. It just means you need to cook it right away when you get home. You can always freeze it for later after you cook it.

When I'm trying to save $$, it seems like we eat a lot of leg quarters, burgers, and canned tuna.

Thank you girls. I so miss my shrimp and steaks. I know I am going to make egg salad as there is an abundance of easter eggs. I just knew though that I couldn't survive on egg salad for 5 days.

Joy, the meat at Publix is insanely expensive. I usually end up at Albertson's when they have snow crab for $5.99 a pound, or ribeye for $5.49 a pound. I never buy meat at Publix. I'll have to try Sav-a-lot. It's a little bit out of the way, but maybe it will be worth it.

Kelly, do you have an Aldi near by. I did a search at www.aldi.com and you just might. They have expanded so much in the last year and thier fish and seafood look very good. It makes me wish i liked fish and seafood lol. Chicken prices beat Giant Eagle by leaps and bounds as well as most everything else. I shop save a lot and aldi, and then go to walmart or giant for items which they don't have. HTH, lisaj

                      Re: Low budget Help

Hi I'm in Oklahoma (beef country) and the meat prices are crazy too. I just came from the store with 6 packs of t-bone steak, beef rounds and roast plus olive oils, herbs, an low carb marinades, heavy whipping cream (large container ) and red leaf lettuce. Its about a week and a half worth for $57. I buy generic products and the beef is reduced or marked down.I grew up around hunters that would hang and age the kill before cutting it up so I know the reduced meat is safe when cooked well.I only buy beef like this but not hamburger, nor do I buy sea food or chicken past its prime, but I've never had an issue with the beef getting a brown tint to it,just avoid it if it goes brown to green or has not been refridgerated correctly. T-bone steak is sooo good.It was marked $7.98 per pound and I bought it for half of that!

When buying hamburger I buy the cheap high fat blend(cheaper),we eat alot of tuna, sardines (sound gross but yummy and high in calcium),whole chickens for $ 0.69 per pound and cut them up to cook, I also buy the big BOX of bacon for $11.00 (reject cuts ) fry them up and store them in ziplock bags in the freezer. Its alot cheaper than the small packages and cooks up just as good. I'm not a big pork eater but it is cheaper than beef so we grab chops or ground pork a couple days per week.Don't for get plain ole eggs ,they should be on sale currently with easter just passing.I don't eat that many any more because they seem to aggrivate my stomach for some reason. I change the flavors alot with herbs so I don't feel like I'm eating the same thing all the time.Good luck.
