  • hello! - on day 5

Hi I'm new to all this and would love some advice

Have been doing induction since Thursday and thought I had messed everything up when I discovered that butternut squash was NOT the same as summer squash

Anyway - I weighed myself today and I have lost 8 pounds ! Of course I am really excited about this - but it seems 'to good to be true' and I am concerned that there will be some sort of kickback from my body and I will start putting on weight following the same plan..
This has happened to me before (although I have never done Atkins)

I have the DANDR book and have followed it very carefully - apart from the butternut squash incident - and I have been slightly hungry from time to time - (nowhere near as hungry as I was when I was stuffing down carbs all the time) but thought that was normal with induction.
I know I should be pleased but just wanted to check with you guys

there are times I quite fancy more cream cheese

would that be ok d'you reckon?

here is what I ate yesterday as an example:

    Brekky :
10.45am - 3 egg omelette with salad (75g) and chopped tomato (55g) cream cheese dressing (55g)

    Lunch:
    4.15pm - tin of tuna (150g) with Caesar dressing ( 1.1g per 100ml - used about 50g) and 75g salad

    snack - 6pm
salad (75g) with Caesar dressing (about 50g)

    Dinner:

7.30 pm couple of spoonfuls of cream cheese followed by lamb chops (about 200g) with broccoli and cauliflower (145 g)

this is pretty typical - execept I would usually use my cream cheese allowance up by watering it down and using it as salad dressing . The caesar dressing was a bit of an extra.

this is the first day I had 4 meals rather than 3 too...

any advice would be much appreciated

confused by grams... so let me think... 230g to a cup... soooo....

    230g "other" veggies - you have 145g broc and cauli + 55g tomato = 200 - you can up that a bit....

460g "salad" veggies - you have 75+75+75 - 225 - thats under! need more veggies!!

4 meals a day is fine. most doctors will recommend 4-6 smaller meals a day rather than 3 large anyway!

does your caesar dressing have sugar added??

your body wont kick back if you follow the plan, though be aware you dont have *that* much to lose so you need to hit the rungs of OWL after your 14 day induction.

I think your doing pretty darn great!

      Hi there Emma !

thanks a lot for your reply

I can eat more veg? Fantastic!

sorry - I'm not used to cups coz i'm in the uk

I think I'm getting really confused by this net carbs thing -

In the book it says 230g of salad veg and up to 200g grams of other veg doesn't it? so I rounded it down a bit to 75g per meal for salad and 65 for other veg per meal to be 'on the safe side' but does that mean 'net carbs' or just weighing out your veggies? I've just been weighing out my veg and not thinking about 'net carbs'

No - there is no sugar in the caesar dressing - it's in the fresh salad dressing section at Waitrose - my local supermarket - and it's delicious

I have M.E. (chronic fatigue syndrome) and actually feel a bit clearer and am sleeping better already so I think this way of eating is suiting me - I'm doing it to help the condition as well as the weight thing - so going onto owl at the end of 2 weeks will suit me fine

Thanks so much for the encouragement !

      You' re doing amazingly !

it's great to see how people seem to do so well on this plan

I'm in the UK too honey! it is confusing to start with!

is that what it says in the book?? which book do you have?? here we go from the 2002 edition... mine states that you can have 2 cups salad veggies and 1 cup other veggies

and theres 230g in a cup...well 229.9! so now im confused too!! i go from cup sizes to be honest, i just purchased the measuring thing from Ikea - i found its easier to keep track of. you should be able to get one in any supermarket i would think?

This is a great WOE and it seems to sort out or at least help lots of peoples conditions!

        Thanks for your compliments!!

ok i missed a point you made there... weighing out is just that, weighing out.

A net carb is carbs minus fibre.

Your best bet is to go to www.fitday.com and have a play around adding foods.

mines not the best example as i sometimes forget to fill things in however!! it does let me know my net carbs when i need to! click here to see mine.

oh oh oh i remember! haha.... i'll get there eventually!

you have the british version obviously! but i remember a discussion in here a couple of years ago about this.... basically it seemed everyone worked out that the best way to do is to not weigh, its to measure the amount by volume...

Use fluid ounces instead of the weight ounces!

Also, remember that you will lose water weight initially. If you keep drinking all the water you are supposed to, that water weight should not come back. Also, weight naturally fluctuates, especially if you are exercising. Don't worry if you bounce a pound or two around in a week's time.

Thanks - I am drinking loads of water so hopefulluy that should help

That's what I'm worried about really - that if I put on a bit of weight I'll feel like I've done something wrong - even though I know logically that everyone says it DOES fluctuate.

I think in a way it might be better to not weigh myself again till the end of induction, but it's so tempting ...I remember reading somewhere else here that it's funny how we can resist the temptation not to cheat on our food more easily that the temptation to keep weighing ourselves!

Re: hello! - on day 5

Thanks for posting the link to Soliwit's list of weights per cup of veggies, Emma. I was starting to worry when you talked about 230 grams being a cup.

Cups are designed to measure liquids not solids so one cup = 8 US FLUID ounces(not weight ounces) which = 237 mls

As we see from that list soliwit put together (thanks again for your hard work soliwit) different veggies weigh different weights per cup so for induction you will need to find the weight of a cupsworth of each veg you are going to use to be sure you are not overdoing things.

It really would be easier to get some measuring cups and put the veggies in them - you can buy them from most kitchen equipment shops or the larger supermarkets in UK and they do make veg amounts simpler to cope with!

Or for awkward shaped veggies you can fill a large measuring jug up to the 237 mls mark with water and put enough veg in it to make the water rise to the 474 mls mark, so you know you have added one cup of veggies to the one cup of water.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
