  • Is Bacon considered processed???

Ok, I've been eating like 3-4 pieces of pork regular bacon every morning. Then I read in Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution that it is considered processed..like hot dogs, bologna, salami..and we should stay clear of those foods. Did I read that right???? What am I gonna do for bacon?

I saw that too...I bought some turkey bacon. Not sure if its still considered processed. It probably is. I think if you just try not to eat that much of it, maybe its ok. Anybody???? I am pretty new to this myself, so not sure.

This was taken October 2007, I weigh 375.

I was on atkins last year in the early fall and lost about 30 pounds. I obviously gained it back...but I know this is the right diet for me as it works very good. So I am back!

I'm new to this as well, and I would also like to know about this. I thought it was a matter of nitrates? And that nitrate free bacon would be okay. However, when I went looking for nitrate free bacon in my town, I could not find it.

I looked at both packages. I have regular and Jennie o Turkey bacon. Both are cured with sodium nitrate. Hmmm

I buy my chicken from Trader Joes...I wonder if they have bacon that isn't cured in sodium nitrate? Or maybe sunflower market. Do you have a health food store around you? If so you may want to check with them.

I only been eating it with breakfast so far. Sigh...

I no longer think that much about food, other than a source of energy for my body.

Except for bacon with some cheese. Crispy. It will always be there for me.

Just watch the labels...avoid maple syrup flavored!

there are several brands that carry 'no sugar added' bacon, like for example plumrose.

I have seen bacon with no sugar, and I have seen bacon with no nitrates. I have never seen bacon with no sugar or nitrates. I opt for the no sugar. I buy Gwaltney brand, and it is at every kind of grocery store in my area, including Albertson's and Walmart. It is sooo good, and it's only $2.49 to $2.99, depending on where I get it.

I will look for the no sugar bacon. Although, I am surprised by the price of your bacon. For some reason, in my area of the world, bacon is now crazy expensive. Four to five dollars is about the average, and some are even six or seven. And that's not even organic, just a different smoke flavor.

I get my bacon at Sams Club(4 packs for 8 bucks approx.) I try to get the low sodium kind to help with the possible water retention. Bacon is my morning omlettes best friend!

For whatever reason even the "by the book" people disregard the info about nitrates. I guess because it's inconvenient. The only nitrate free bacon I've ever found has sugar. I've kind of gotten over bacon and don't eat it anymore. I've pretty much given up pork all together, but that's just because of my own personal preference.
