When you're in induction and extended induction-do calories really matter? I'm finding that eating the food that is acceptable on atkins is giving me calories of over 2000 everyday! Sometimes they're really really high. I THOUGHT that it wasn't supposed to matter as long as you were eating approved foods, but I'm starting to worry that there's no way with my 30 minutes of walking I can burn all that off plus excess to result in loss.

Re: Do Calories Matter?
They matter, but if you follow the diet right you are supposedly eating a calorie restricted diet. High fat foods make you feel more satiated, so you eat less. Let's say before Atkins you would order a cheeseburger with fries--now, they bring the same thing but you can only eat what is Atkins acceptable, so you toss the bun and substitute the fries for cottage cheese. You're saving 500+ calories right there. Or a grand slam breakfast, with bacon, eggs, french toast, syrup, and bread... now you can eat just the eggs and bacon--more calorie savings. Did you manage to jot down your caloric intake pre-Atkins?
I don't know how many calories you need each day, but my maintenance is 3600 per day, so 2000 doesn't sound like much to me. Is it really 2000 or does it just look like 2000? When I added up my total on Atkins I was surprised how low it was, and how much food I could eat before I reached 2000 calories.

Re: Do Calories Matter?
Hey Snuggles. If you think about it also...2000 claories doesn't really give you any excess at all. Wityh the stats you provided (age, height, and weight) your BMR is about 1700 calories. This is the amount of calories needed per day just to stay alive without motion and remain the same weight. Add in normal daily activities and your looking around 2500 - 2600, then add in your additional exercise. You're probably looking at burning about 2700-3000 calories per day. So yes, calories matter, but don't worry about it now...
