So- I'm a week in and 6 lbs down- feeling great! I'm happy to report that I don't even get cravings when faced with carbs. But I'm getting tired of explaining to my friends, co-workers and the waitress what I can and cannot eat and why--- some people I just don't care to share this private information with, other times I don't want to go into a Q and A over what I can eat, and I'm sick of people arguing with me about how "unhealthy" they think this WOE is.

So what do you say to friends, family and strangers when they confront you about your eating habits?

    Re: Telling Others

At restaurants I just tell the staff that I have to follow a strict diet and don't give any explanations.

As for family and friends, explaining that I eat more vegetables/fruit daily than they do usually opens the door for education on this WOE. Most everyone around me now knows that I eat healthier than they do and I don't get much static over it anymore. I work around doctors all day long and all of them have made comments about how healthy this WOE is when done properly.

Show by example. Showing others your fresh foods and using your willpower to walk away from sugary desserts will bring them around. My boss handed out these goodie bags this week and she even exchanged all the stuff inside mine for Atkins legal foods just for me!! They will get it if you educate and demonstrate! Good luck!!

      Re: Telling Others

Most of the time I've just said "No thanks" if they offer me something that isn't on my plan.

If I'm going out with others, I just order and don't make a big deal out of it. If asked, I say, "I'm trying to eat healthier". I've not had any problems, I guess because I haven't broadcasted that I'm low-carb to people who I'm not close to.

if i eat out i just order what i want. when i am with friends, again i just eat my own choices. when anyone has asked, i just say i am eating low carb. if they ask what that means, i tell them i don't eat "white food". and that's the truth. usually they want to know why and what difference it has made for me and we are off and running...i sometimes make converts out of them!

Thanks for your responses. I've been trying the, "I just can't" answer and it works for some people. My best friend just doesn't seem to get it or is trying to mess with my head--- she keeps asking me if I can have this or that or whatever and asks why not when I tell her no.

"Why can't you have ice cream? I thought you were watching carbs not sugar?" I just roll my eyes at her.

We (us and our kids and her SO) went to Friendly's for lunch the other day and a grabbed the Reese's out of my daughter's sundae and held it in my friend's face and told her- "this is what I do battle against- the things that make up this stupid little piece of candy are my achille's heal--- and it has no power over me anymore"

            Re: Telling Others

I'm afraid that this way of eating has made me into a BIG LIAR!

I found that if I go out to eat, and try and explain the carbs issues, I have to fight my way through the menu. Now I just say I'm borderline diabetic (which was getting real close to the truth) and allergic to wheat. The restaraunts are more than happy to help you stay healthy then, will help with substitutions, and actually go to the cook and ask about ingredients in the foods (ie: sauces thickened with flour)

As far as friends and family, I've stopped more than one argument when I've nicely inquired as to why they are trying to talk me into a food item that may cause me to have cravings, go off on a binge, and start gaining weight again. At that point I usually get alot of support.

            Good luck

              Re: Telling Others

Sometimes it's easier to say something more like, "I don't eat refined carbohydrates or sugar". Most people tend to not know what the heck you're talking about anyway. Atkins does still have a negative connotation. Most of the time I don't mind telling people I do Atkins, or "The Low Carb Thing" as I call it usually. It does normally spark a discussion which can go in weird directions.

Oh i've used all sorts of excuses and lies!

dependent on where i am i say "I'm diabetic" or "i'm watching my blood sugar levels" or "i'm allergic to wheat," I'm bored of trying to explain to people so these seem to cut the convo short.

Sometimes I say I am prediabetic and watching my carbs.. Sometimes I say I am Low-Carbing.. I almost never say I am doing Atkins..

Its gotten better now that people understand how I eat.. My daughter's boyfriends family goes out of there way to take care of me.. I tell it its pretty simple...give me some meat and a veggie and I am satisfied

I did what higgies suggested: I just say "I don't eat anything with added sugars and refined carbohydrates. I'm changing my diet to one that relies on largely unrefined and unprocessed whole, natural foods."

After that, there's usually no need for further explanation. If they do press, then I just rattle off what highly processed, highly refined and unnatural foods are.

I was faced with a situation at a restuarant with my husband and his manager when I ordered, I just made certain the foods were legal and I really did not elaborate. You do get weary explaining you food choices. By the way, I am not up on some of the acronyms used in these threads; what is WOE? Keep up your good work and know you are doing what is right for you.
