  • I'm on Day 8 of induction with questions!

good morning everone. I've been reading some threads with regard to staing on induction or going onto OWL I have lost a minimal amount of weight ( my menu so far today is posted please look at it and give me your feedback). I have pretty much decided to stay on Induction until I see some weight come off, at least 10lbs. I've increased my veggies a bit to equal 3 cups by days end and I do exercise but I'm curious as to why I should by the 2000 version of the Atkins Diet Book as I own the 1992 version? Please let me have you opinions on the extended Induction and my book version question. Thanks so much for all of your information.! ( I realize my style is coming off as rather stiff but it's my nature I guess and I really do enjoy this Diet Board). In point of fact, it has been a lifesaver for me; I have someone to talk to.

First off how much do you have to lose? though you say minimal, theres a chart in DANDR that will tell you what kind of metabolism you have, if you do have a high resistance then you should stay on extended induction, if not then you should move up the rungs of OWL.

I weigh 170 lbs, am 5'8" and I need to lose30lbs. I have lost around 3 lbs but depending on the time of day, it is a 2 or 1 lb loss. I have stopped weighing incessantly though as I know it does not help anything.

The 2002 edition was the most recent version of the Diet. Dr. A. adjusted it according to the problems the 1992 dieters ran into.

There are differences. The two major ones are that the 1992 version counts total carbs, not net carbs and the 1992 version allows less vegetables. By 2002, Dr. Atkins realized that we need those vitamins, minerals and fiber from those vegetables and that fiber doesn't affect our blood sugar, so we can eat more of those good foods.

Also the 1992 book differs from the 2002 book in terms of OWL Phase. In 1992, Dr. Atkins let you reintroduce foods willy-nilly. By 2002, he noticed that introducing them in a more organized manner was better for his dieters.

Extending your Induction phase means you are following the Induction rules and eating the Induction foods for longer than the first 14 days of this diet. It's not a 'new' phase, but just a continuation. I think it confuses people that we have an "extended Induction" forum here at ADBB and they think it's completely different phase of the diet. It's not. If you extend your Induction, you do what you did during the first 14 days, keeping your carbs at or below 20 net carbs, following the Induction rules and eating what's on the Induction list.

Extending Induction is only beneficial for people with a high metabolic resistance to weight loss, according to Dr. Atkins in the 2002 book. Since only a very small percentage of us have a high metabolic resistance, the majority of us don't need to extend our Induction phase beyond the 14 days. You determine your degree metabolic resistance to weight loss is to compare your 14 day weight loss to what's in the charts in the book.

By the way, extending Induction doesn't guarantee 'faster' or consistent weight loss. Many OWLers have noticed that their weight loss rate was faster and more consistent on OWL than Induction. But again, it probably depends on your degree of metabolic resistance.

Hey thanks for the explanation; I did not understand how to figure out if I was insuling resistant or any of the other formulas to know how much to eat!
