  • Having your cake(coffee) and eating too

So I read back and forth and back on forth on coffee and caffeine. Is it bad or is it good? I hear if you consider everything one carb, it's ok. Even the Atkins Advantage website said it's acceptable, but on here people swear it's plain awful. I don't crave sweets, ever, so if that's the only reason not to.......can i?

BTW, on Atkins for 3 days and I am 5'10", 220. Lost 65 lbs in the last 6 months on macrobiotics but I was waaaaay bored. Goal weight is in 175 and I am extremely muscular from running.

    Please give your advice...everyone!!!!

Re: Having your cake(coffee) and eating too

According to the book, Dr. Atkins wrote "excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine."

Many people mistakenly believe that the only symptom of unstable blood sugar is cravings. In Chapter 12 of the book, there is a chart labelled BLOOD SUGAR SYMPTOM TEST. The chart has 48 blood sugar symptoms listed in addition to food cravings.

So my advice is to look at those symptoms listed in the chart and see if you do indeed have blood sugar symptoms.

It's a Japanese purity diet of mainly brown rice, fish and vegetables. Basically, you can eat anything that isn't processed. I also quit smoking at this time. It has been 9 months. It was extremely difficult to follow because every meal starts from scratch and it is time consuming. I will have to admit, I melted before eyes. Anywas, Atkins is a realistic approach for where I am right now. Except for the caffeine thing, which is one huuuge reason why I quit macrobiotics. I forgt to mention that I also drink green tea.

        Please Help!!!!!!

I was a 10 cup a day drinker 4 years (except when pregnant) I am down to 1 cup a day and WOW. I was on a rollercoaster before. I would drink some in the a.m. then more @ work, then lunch then the afternoon blahs hit and around 2 I would get more. I didnt realise I wasn't sllep too good and after a cup your energy is good then crash and you need more then big crash. I feel so much better in the afternoon now. I drink tons of water and try to go for a nap when the afternoon blahs hit and it works so much better than coffee. Thats my experience, I have so much more steady energy and I need it w/ 4 kids and thats why I drank 10 cups a day before!

Green tea is fine, but you cannot count it toward your daily water quota. Make sure you drink your minimum 8 glasses per day. Most people do not have issues with green tea, but again, look out for those blood sugar symptoms.
