  • Does this diet lower High Blood Pressure?

I am in need of a diet that DOES lower high blood pressure...I went off my medicine this tuesday and can't decide if I want the DASH DIET or ATKINS. I'm really NOT having much luck with DASH as it is loaded with carbs and I seem to be bloating and spreading. WILL ATKINS Help me? I have lost on it before, (didn't have high blood pressure then)(18lbs worth!)- but I don't want to jepordize my health.

    Hello Cool Water and welcome.

Most people find that their BP numbers improve substantially by doing Atkins. Cholesterol and blood sugar numbers improve dramatically too. Dr Atkins was a cardiologist before he was ever a diet guru and this way of eating reflects his concern with keeping patients heart healthy.

If I were you, I'd definitely give it a try.

Re: Does this diet lower High Blood Pressure?

I had decided to do Atkins because I was feeling way too tired and sluggish and having other issues as well, so I went to the doctor. He said my blood pressure was wayyy to high and he also ran some blood and did a few tests and said I was for sure a diabetic and recommended I go to a class and wanted to give me pills to empty all the sugar from my kidneys. He said that would cause me to gain some weight and all as well, and I told him NO! I said I'd consider that as a last result. I was already way too heavy. I was so aggrivated at him for not even listening to me that I refused to see that doctor again. Maybe he finished last in his class. LOL Anyway, I started Atkins and take vitamins and FISH OIL capsules as well and so far, my sugar went from staying over 250 all the time and rising above 300 after every meal to normal! It stays low. I even got off atkins for a week while on vacation and went and treated myself some donuts and ice cream and continued to much all week. I gained 4 pounds on vavcation back. But my sugar never rose above the normal range, so Atkins essentially cured my diabetes or normalized or something, seems to be a non factor. Not to mention I have dropped 32 lbs and my blood pressure is much improved and continues to improve!!! I have hit a stall lately but realized it was candida but now I've almost gotten it whipped and I'm losing again!!! No more bloating now, clearer thinking, my saliva is thinner even. Even the middle of the night bathroom runs that come with prediabetes and diabetes are over. My thirst is quinched and I don't stay thirsty forever now that candida is under control!! This diet is the real deal but it takes dedication and some work, but the rewards are there with time. And not to mention, SEX is better!!

I know from experience that Atkins is the way to go , but I have to caution you to see your Dr. Fooling with blood pressure can be very dangerous.
When you see him take an induction and OWL menus. Many people (even Dr.s) run from the name with out giving it a chance.

Welcome Cool Water. Yes, this woe does lower your blood pressure and stablize glucose levels. It IS NOT a quick fix. It takes time for your body to adjust and cleanse itself from the toxins we have ingested. When I started this woe, I was at 374, Type- 2 diabetic and High blood pressure I was on medication for all of it, including high lipids. After 48 days on Atkins my diabetes stablized and I no longer required medication for it. After 10 months, my High blood pressure was gone and I no longer needed medication for that too. As far as my lipids, They are all at a healthy level. All this because I have lost 118.5 pounds and continue to lose weight because of this lifestyle. If I were you I would continue your blood pressure medication untill your doctor sees that your blood pressure stablized. It takes time and detication. It's not a quick fix and it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle!

Coolwater, this WOE lowers not until body fat but almost anything you can think of. Stick with this for 6 weeks and you will see amazing results next time you have a blood work done and blood pressure checked. Good luck!

Re: Does this diet lower High Blood Pressure?

I've tried the DASH diet for my blood pressure and could not stay on it...I was sooooooooo hungry. I ended up aquiring a new habit that I had never had before...I would wake up in the middle of the night to eat. You could find me with the fridge wide open at 3am on any given day during that time. after about 2 weeks, I had to stop.

I've found Atkins to be much better tolerated. I have not been stable on Atkins long enough to recognize any BP changes yet though. Good luck with your decision, but from personal experience, I'd lean towards Atkins and make a conscious effort to decrease the sodium intake.

Re: Does this diet lower High Blood Pressure?

Thank you guys for your input. I will do atkins starting today. On Monday I had taken my blood pressure and it was 121/82. I have a home monitor and was on just water pills for the last six months, and atenolol for the last two years. The doctor took me off the atenolol at my request and put me on the water pills. I had gone to the doc on the 23rd of this month and have made the decision to stop the pills. I have no insurance and the doc charges 105 dollars a wack(will only give out 30 days supply of pills).Plus the cost of the pills, which are under 10.00. But to have to pay 105.00 EVERY month is overwelming for me.
I feel very good now since tuesday. I have more energy and can still remain calm in situations. I did read that it took 5 days for water pills to clear the system. Today I will start atkins. I will put in my weight and get a journal going. I will get some kind of picture on when I post-not me though..I am 4'8" ,58 yrs old, and am 27lbs over weight as of today. Thank you all.
