    Re: Starting Today.

    Hayden,

The number 20 for the limit on carbs during Induction is not really a "magic" number... it is a number Dr. A came up with because most people can lose on it. You definitely need to try to stay within that number, but if you inadverdently went over by one or two every now and then, I don't think it would ruin anything.

What foods are you going to eat that you fear would push you over the 20? A lot of people who don't use Fitday from the beginning find that they are eating less than 20 when they really start measuring and counting. That's what happened to me.

Oh yeah, I looked up Special Category Foods and it says that "to add variety you can also eat ten to twenty olives, half a small avocado, one ounce of sour cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks."

      Good question.

This idea was based on that I often snack on sweets, and chocolate. This needs to stop. I read in the book that it was a good idea to spread the carb intake out over the day, so not to get spikes.

Since I work 13 hours shifts, the snacking temptation is very high.

Olives in size, shape, texture, and carb value seemed to fit the bill. As sweet replacements.

Plus, I could eat a couple over the day/night shift, which would keep the carb intake, level over the day.

As an Engineer, I tend to think in Problems and Solutions, contexts.

I am happy to abandon any bad ideas, and replace with better ideas based on experience.

        Re: Starting Today.

Hy Hayden good to see another Brit on board!

The carbs in eggs are mentioned in DANDR right at the back of the book in the Carb counter section.

Look at the section titled 'Meat Poultry and Fish' and you will see he lists one egg as having 0.6 carbs.

I second what has been said about eating different vegetables than just olives and pickles - in fact olives arent a vegetable at all!

Look at both lists of allowed vegetables to find some you can get in Japan. You will probably have some similar vegetables over there that Dr Atkins hadnt heard of too. If you can find ones that are the same type as the ones listed I reckon they will be fine, as long as you check their carb content is similar to the listed ones.

We have many international members, so post about any veggies you think might be OK but are not sure of here to see what the more experienced foodies can advise you.

One thing I did when I started was do a google 'images' search of the names of the veggies I didnt recognise. I found that what is called 'Zucchini' in USA we call 'courgettes', and 'Eggplant' we call 'aubergines' for example.

If you havent searched for images before, all you do is go to www.google.com and instead of typing the word to search for in the normal box, click on the word 'Images' above that box to be taken to the 'images search' page where you can type the name of the veg you are wondering about.

We have a board section about food and cooking which has a whole forum for Snacks so visit here http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...aysprune=&f=25 to get some legal ideas for things other than olives and pickles.

I made cheese crackers a regular item as they do not need refrigerating and are convenient to carry.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

            Hello sensfan1960,

            The book says:

            Copyright (c) 1992, 1999, 2002 by Robert C Atkins, MD.

So I believe it is the 2002 version.

              Re: Starting Today.

Reading all these replies, and all the advice, and all the experience that has been gained. I have concluded that these "carbs from olives" is just not a good idea.

I have had a rethink, this is what I'll do for carbs over the next coming weeks.
              • I will use a green salad with vinegar or a little lemon juice as a dressing.
              • Or Green peppers, slightly grilled.
              • Or beansprouts, fried, or raw if I am brave.
              • Plus have a look at some other ideas on this board.
I can also agree that eggs need to be counted towards carbs. I didn't know that last night, which just goes to show the benefit of this board and it's members.

For my breakfast today, I had raw sashumi blue-fin tuna.
Uncooked red meat tuna. With no rice. Lovely!
(A few strange looks from my co-workers, whom asked why I wasn't touching the white rice)

              24 hours into my induction.
Had some very strange dreams last night, which I am sure is due to the lack of sugar.

Not feeling energy-less, which I impressed with. A number of posters talk about the Atkins flu.
