  • Induction - Veggie Question

I'm on Day 9 of Induction and have been averaging about 10 net carbs daily. I'm in deep Ketosis (hitting purple/magenta for the past five to six days). I think I've hit my plateau as I stopped losing weight two to three days ago. I got two questions:

When I'm feeling hungry, I usually just cook two to three more cups of broccoli, which pushes me past the 3 cup veggie rule. Is this OK as long as I stay under 20 carbs?

I also bought a large pack of Nathan's Beef Franks because each frank only contained 1g of carbs on the label. I've eaten them daily because I didn't know about nitrates. Should I stop eating them?

    Thanks

Technically on the veggie rule, No. Wait just a couple more days and get the full 14 days beneath your belt. Try eating different "salad" veggies that are a bit higher in carb. I averaged about 12-15 net during induction...remember you have to count all carbs. Eggs have 1 carb each, sweetners have 1 carb each, coffee has carbs too. Count everything.

Moving on though, after the first 14 days, go ahead and move into the ongoing weight loss rung and feel free to enjoy those extra veggies and continue to lose weight. With that said, you are probably starting to experience what's known around here as the Post Induction Stall Syndrome. Many people experience it...in fact, I'd guess that MOST do. Anyway, it's where your body takes a little time to adjust to the weight loss and the new way of eating. You are still burning fat, but the body doesn't believe that the changes are for real...so it starts packing all the lost fat space with water. Once it realizes that the changes ARE real, it will release the water and you'll get a nice big loss on the scale for sticking through it. Now...the moral of this long and dragged out explanation..>STICK WITH IT...it's normal, just stick with it.

Thanks valid, I know people say inches continue coming off while the scale remains static.

I like the acronym .. P.I.S.S. ... which is actually a crude way of saying what you do when you get past the stall part. Cute. My feet and hands were really bloated at the end of the second week, but it passed within a couple of days. I was wondering what that was ... thanx for the info.

F0ld--yes, that happens on Atkins too. I would lose big pounds one week and the inches would drop the next. Not too often would I have losses of pounds and inches in the same week. You'll go through these "pauses" as your body adjusts. It's truly not a "stall" unless you've had 4 weeks of no losses on the scales or inches. If you're losing inches, you're not stalled. If you're losing pounds you're not stalled.

          six--LOL yeah

Dark ketostix can mean that one is not drinking enough water to flush out the ketones.
Are you drinking your recommended daily requirement of water?

                Hi FOldorDie

This is my third time doing induction, and I also average 10-12 carbs daily unless I increase my veggies, which is what I have been doing. I don't drink coffee or splenda, and its difficult to get the carbs up! I really want to go up in clear 5gm increments, ie 20,25,30. So I believe increasing my veges is the healthiest way of doing so.

                  Re: Induction - Veggie Question

Just remember, if you are hungry between meals, you either haven't eaten enough OR you haven't eaten enough fat. Fat keeps you satisfied between the meals. Fiber helps to fill you up during the meals.

Just a word about the vegetables....

There are 54 vegetables on the Induction list. Some of them have nearly 0 carbs and some of them have about 5-10 net carbs per 1 cup serving. Many people make the mistake of thinking the higher carb veggies are "Bad"---they aren't. They are okay to eat. In fact, it's better for you to spend 10 net carbs on 1 cup of pumpkin puree than it is to spend it on coffee (1 net carb per 8 oz), cream (1 net carb per tablespoon) and 3 splendas (1 net carb per packet).

As for the OWL carb ladder---you add 5 net carbs of Induction vegetables to whatever your Induction menu was/is. So if you averaged 15 net carbs during your Induction, your first addition in OWL will be 5 net carbs of Induction veggies, making your OWL net carb total 20.

And don't forget, you count the carbs of EVERYTHING you eat and drink. I've been reading too many messages lately in which people are only counting the vegetable carbs. EVERYTHING is counted: egg carbs, cream carbs, cheese carbs, sweetener carbs, meat carbs (some shellfish and organ meats have carbs), etc.
