I am so sick to my stomach and I am soooo tired. I just started Atkins two days ago and I cant believe how horrible I feel! I want to go to the gym and work out but I might heave. Help!

Welcome to the beautiful and magical period called "induction flu". It's nothing unexpected and the only real cure is to wait it out. For most people it only lasts a couple days. Just hang in there and don't give up. Your body needs this detoxing period to cleanse itself of the insidious effects that those sugars and refined starches have on your body.

    Best of luck!

Aw, Riley, I feel for ya, hon! But this, too, shall pass.

Think of this as your body's period of withdrawal from sugars and refined carbs. (True, it would be so much nicer if you were in a cushy rehab center like Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears were, but on the other hand, you're getting healthy, and they obviously did not)

Expect any of the following symptoms: headache, body ache, muscle ache, nausea, feeling of feverishness, exhaustion, lethargy, wishing-you-were-dead. (ok, the last is an exaggeration).

Here's what to do: 1. Load up on ibuprofin or tylenol; 2. Drink water, water, water (the more you drink, the faster you flush out your system; 3. Sleep. If you can take naps, do so. 4. Eat tiny bits when you are nauseous, maybe a half of a devilled egg, or a piece of string cheese. Tiny snacks throughout the day if you can't bear the thought of a full meal. You want to keep your body on the track to burn fat for energy; 5. Try to get some MILD exercise, like a rambling walk or yoga/stretch.

This usually passes in about 48 hours. Everyone on this board can promise you that when it is over, you will experience a burst of energy and a sense of well-being that lasts a long, long, long time!

Well Im one to say that the hole thing about wishing you were dead during the first couple days is soooo true lol. My first day was the worst, i felt like a coccaine addict that needed her fix, I couldnt stop moving, I even talked to myself, I was hot then cold then hot again. Its what induction does, after your first week u should be feeling much better, and yes drink lots of water and have some snacks during the day. I feel so much better now and Im 1 week in.

Dont give up, it will pass, we promise

P.s. My first time on atkins, i actually did heave

I am 8 days into induction and have strictly followed all of the rules. I am having lots of trouble with big swings in weight from water retention. Getting frustrated! I have bounced around from 10 pounds to 5 pounds weight loss this week. I'd say I might have lost 2 real pounds that's not water. Not sure I want to stick with Atkins. Feel lousy and not really seeing the benefits over other diets like weight watchers where I can eat more variety of foods. Any other menopausers out there who are having probs with water weight?

This is day 3 for me and finally today the stomach is starting to settle. I felt terrible last night but I hauled myself to the gym (fully expecting to leave after 5 minutes because my stomach was so upset). Once I did a few minutes on the elliptical, I felt fine and carried on with my workout. I have had a doozy of a headache, it starts to subside and then bang, it's back again. I called in sick to work yesterday and had to leave work this morning because my head hurt so bad. I came home and went to bed!

A bit of 'tough love ' here first, wwb.

If the normal weight fluctuations we all get whether we are 'dieting' or not are going to upset you DON'T WEIGH DAILY!!

If you weighed on day one and then on day 14 and found you had lost 5 pounds in the 2 weeks I bet you would have been happy and raring to carry on lowcarbing, so dont tempt your resolve by weighing often.

Secondly - if you are missing variety only follow induction for the first 2 weeks then move straight to OWL and start to move up the carbohydrate ladder so you can have more food options and make this a more sustainable way of eating as Dr Atkins intended.

The feeling lousy is often a part of detoxing and converting your body into a fat burning machine, so hang in there and it will improve I am sure.

As to variety - are you restricting yourself to only a few of the induction vegetable choices? There are 54 of them if I recall correctly!!

I have never followed weightwatchers so have no idea as to what would be possible on their regime, but a 'diet' that allows 3 cups of veggies, enough meat/fish/fowl/cheese/eggs cooked with butter/cream/olive oil to make you feel satisfied doesnt look to me to be unvaried!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
