  • How many grams of fat minimum do I need?

    Hello all!

    Quick question:

How many grams of fat minimum do I need to consume to stay in ketosis and keep losing? I'm 29 yrs old, 5'11", 190 lbs (down 15 lbs since I started Atkins 4 weeks ago!!!), and 26% body fat. I've stalled so I'm going to start watching my calories (nothing too drastic) but don't want to eat too little fat and risk burning protien instead.

I tried searching the forums as I am certain this questions has been asked before, but the words "grams", "fat", and "need" are either too short or too common to work! =)

    Thanks!

do you input your foods into fitday.com?

you should be heading for around 65% fat - thats the best way to work it out rather than grams!

15lbs in 4 weeks is great, congrats!

Re: How many grams of fat minimum do I need?

I don't know if you are male or female, so I'll give figure for both:

Figure your basal metabolic rate http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/. This is the MINIMUM amount of calories our bodies need at REST. For a female, this would be 1679. For a male it is 1954.

      So, 1679 times 65% (Atkins) is 1091 and 1954 is 1270.

Each gram of fat is 9 calories. So

For a female 1091 calories divided by 9 is 121 grams of fat
For a male 1270 calories divided by 9 is 141 grams of fat

      Keep in mind that's minimum.
