  • 12 lbs in 1st 4 days... few questions

    Hey everyone,
I tried atkins 2 years ago but quit. Just started again about 4 or five days ago... and down 12 lbs already. So apparently im doing something right. I been drinking lots of water and lots of exercise. but i do have a few questions...

I read years ago on the official atkins website that they allow you to not count the carbs of the first five eggs you eat in a day. so you only count carbs from eggs after the fifth one of the day. But now i cant find anything about it... is it still true?

also i read, i think here, that milk is not allowed... does that include low-carb (3 carbs) 2% milk? also i sometimes eat half a lowcarb (3 net) flat bread with a hamburger, is that ok if its not triggering a craving?

I don't know about the egg thing.
As for milk and the flat bread, it's a no for you right now. You're still in induction, so you're supposed to stick to the list of foods in the book--did you read the book?
The reason is because you're supposed to move up the rungs.

12lbs in 4 days is wonderful! How many pounds are you wanting to lose?

I've never, ever in my 5 years on Atkins heard of the '5 egg' rule. I've read Atkins '72 all the way through to current versions and have never read it in any of those either, so - I have no idea where that's coming from. You count every carb you eat.

Pitas/flatbread/2% are not allowed on induction- and they're not allowed until every ingredient in them has been reached by you in OWL. Rule 5 of Induction is :
Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.

That's the rules of induction circa 2002 - in the new rules put out by Atkins Nutritionals (NOT Dr. Atkins), they blather on about low-carb products. Dr. Atkins didn't make those additions to the rules - they did.

Congrats on the loss so far! Well done and welcome to ADBB!

I have never heard of the five egg rule either. I highly recommend that you read the book, if you haven't done so already. You are obviously doing something very right if you have lost twelve pounds already. Good for you!

My concern is that you could be setting yourself up for failure if you don't read, read, read and follow the rules as best you can. It may be that you can afford the extra carbs in the bread, etc. BUT it is definitely not for induction.

        Again, congratulations!!!

        1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
        rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
        rung 4 - berries, melon
        rung 5 - wine -
        rung 6 - beans, hummus
        rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
        Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
        (on to pre-maintenance)

I have read an official atkins diet book, but dont know what version. i believe it was '02. i understand why i shouldnt eat the low carb flat bread, but i dont understand why not low carb milk... its not actual milk its a "dairy beverage" that tastes like milk. i think the main ingredients are like water and cream. 3 carbs a serving... still not ok?

            Still not ok.

You can, of course, make your own version by buying heavy cream and diluting it with water.

But no wheat or grains of any kind except up to 3 tablespoons of flax seed meal.
            Start date: 7/29/2007

            Scale: SW:235 CW:193
            GW:150

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

            Mini goals:
            215 - met 9/10/07
            205 - met 10/17/07
            195 - met 2/20/08
            180

            I survived a two-month stall!

Why not law carb milk? Because it's not on the Acceptable Foods List. My best advice to you is to re-read the book. I have read it cover to cover several times, and I often just pick a spot and start reading to referesh my memory. I was just doing that this morning.

Atkins is a very specific plan that is outlined beautifully in the 2002 version of DANDR. Don't bother with versions put out after that. Get the real deal and follow it to the letter. You will be so glad you did!

By the way, your weight loss so far is astounding. Please make the effort to do Atkins correctly, because you have enormous potential. Best wishes.
