  • Estimated Weight Loss for Male who sheds weight rather quickly (I think)

Hey all, Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a 32 yr old male 5'6 in height and started Atkins 10 days ago weighing 228.5 10 days later I am at 215.5. Now I understand that the first week is fast (lost 9.5 in 7 days) but I've been roughly droppin about 1/2 pound daily in the last 3-4 days. Just want to know what to expect for weight loss per week. I seem to be on the quick side for losing and plan to stay on a very close to induction style of eating for some months to come.

I think that's pretty normal for a man who weighs as much as you. Men tend to drop the weight really fast on Atkins. I think this way of eating works better for men. Also, here's my other theory: men have probably not "dieted" as much as women have. So men have not messed up their bodies as much through yo-yo dieting. It's thus easier for their bodies to let go of the fat.

It's funny, my guy is the same way - ten pounds in a few days. Probably about your weight too. It was almost as if his body was just so relieved to not be processing junk. It was just so happy to not have to deal with another taco or cheeseburger.

Another reason why men may lose a little faster is their diets are probably worse before they start Atkins than the women's are. Especially the young men. They're probably eating more takeout and convience foods than women are before they start. So I think that the shock to the body is much more severe.

But as tempting as it sounds, I would not stay on induction. You're losing really fast which means that you have a low metobolic resistance. Go ahead and move through the rungs. You'll still be losing loads of weight, but you'll be more likely to stay on the plan, and, more importantly, stay on lifetime maintainence.

Wait the full 14 days before you start calculating your losses per week.

Then compare your losses for the 14 days to the "Weight Loss During the First Two Weeks on a Fat-Burning Program for Patients at Three Levels of Obesity" chart in chapter 13 of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 ed.

If you have "average" or "low" metabolic resistance to weight loss according to that chart, it would be in your best interest to move to the On-Going Weight Loss Phase within the next 1-2 weeks rather than stay on Induction in hopes that your weight loss will remain at the same rate or increase in rate. It's been our experience at ADBB that people who do not have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss but stay on Induction hit a weight loss plateau that is only broken when they move onto On-Going Weight Loss phase. In fact, Dr. Atkins says in the last sentence of Chapter 13 "People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer than two weeks because it gives them time to correct the metabolic imbalances they may have developed over time."

Your guess is as good as mine! People are too different to try to guess and there's too many variables involved (exercise, type of work, water consumption, how long you've been overweight, how many times you have been on a diet, etc.). I could just as easily predict if you would win the lottery as to predict weight loss.

The thing is to stay on plan and follow the rules, don't get discouraged if the losses slow down. It's not a race, but if you stay the course, you'll make the finish line. Best of luck to you!
