I have been trying to get her to start this woe for a month and she finally did 2 days ago. She tested with the stix todayand she is in ketosis. I'm very excited for her she is only 15 and needs to lose about 50 lbs. She just registered on the board today so she will probably post tomorrow. She thinks I'm weird for posting on this board but soon she will be weird too. I am so proud of her.
Her screen name is fattymcfatfatz. Please "show her some luv" and reply to her posts. She needs the extra support.

Re: My daughter finally started atkins!
Congrats to your daugther for wanting to lose weight, but Atkins is an adult-type diet. Since she is 15, her nutritional needs are different than us, oldies. Teens are still growing and developing.Originally posted by meatyI have been trying to get her to start this woe for a month and she finally did 2 days ago. The Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine did treat overweight children and teens with a low carb diet. That diet is outlined in a book called "Feed Your Kids Well" by Dr. Fred Pescatore, who was the associate medical director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s. It's a diet more suitable to a teenager than Atkins is because it meets their nutritional needs better.
Also I suggest you get your daughter's doctor involved with this process. Again, because she is a teenager, her nutritional needs are very important to maintain while she is losing weight. Her doctor will be able to monitor things like her blood tests (cholesterol, etc.) and other health factors to ensure she is maintaining her health as she loses the weight.

Re: My daughter finally started atkins!
I was thinking the same thing as Not2late. When I was a teen a doctor discouraged me from doing Atkins for that same exact reason. Just something to think about.
Anyway, I'm glad she's decided to lose weight before she gets older. My gosh, the older you get the harder it is to shed the lbs.

Re: My daughter finally started atkins!
I thought about her nutritional needs being different too. I have her taking a children's multivitamin and a calcium supplement. Her doctor hasnt approved atkins but he has told us that she needs to lose weight. I do wish that I had started younger as well. would have saved me a lot of hard work now! thank you all for the support.

Re: My daughter finally started atkins!
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends initial cholesterol screening to be done at age 2 if they have a parent or grandparent with a history of high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, etc. and the screens are to continue throughout childhood and adolescence. Since about 1 in 3 people in the USA have high cholesterol, it's almost a given that children and teens have at least one parent or grandparent with this problem. And due to the increase in childhood and adolescent obesity, traditionally "adult" health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes are becoming "childhood" health issues too.Originally posted by LC_DaveAwesome news! Meaty, please try to find a copy of Dr. Pescatore's book. You wouldn't want your daughter to lose weight, but compromise her general health while doing it. Again, teens have different nutritional needs than adults and Atkins is an "adult" diet.

Re: My daughter finally started atkins!
I also think its very good to start children early on a low carb diet.
As I child I was regularly fed loads and loads of carbs regularly around the clock. Pasta, bread, snack cakes, pizza, were almost a daily affair in my family. Subsequently my whole family shows obesity tendencies. Only through aktins has my cravings for carbs stopped. Good luck.
