  • Added sugar?can someone explain

Hi,my name is Vanessa and I am on my second day of induction. Thus far I have not eaten anything with any added sugar carbs. But my question is:
On induction it says you can have sour cream....which has added sugar...no matter what brand you check.
Once you start atkins you aren't supposed to eat ANYTHING I mean ANYTHING with added sugar. Right? can someone explain this to me?
    Proudly following the ANA,
    Vanessa

Hello Venessa, I read somewhere that as long as you keep your sugar intake under 3 grams a day that your able to keep a balanced glucose level without any spikes or drops and without addiction. Sour cream (one ounce) is listed in the special food catagory for induction along with olives, avacados, or 3-ounces of unsweetened heavy cream. As well as three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. The reason they're in the special food catagory is because they occasionally slow down weight loss in some people. They may need to be avoided in the first two weeks of induction. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods. Atkins Revised Page 129. I'm sure someone around here knows more. I'm just speaking from experience. I hope this helps, Sherri. P.S. I've actually found a sour cream with 1 gram of sugar per serving (2 tbls).

There is a HUGE difference between "added" sugar and naturally occurring sugar. Such as in sour cream.

For instance, Daisy brand sour cream http://www.daisybrand.com/Products/DaisyRegular.html

has 1 gram of naturally occurring sugar as evidenced in the nutrition Facts label:

HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART--the ingredients list is "GRADE A CULTURED CREAM" and that's it. So, this means that the sugars are not ADDED to the product, they occur naturally. And they are ACCEPTABLE even on induction.

If the ingredients list had said "Grade A cultured cream, sugar" then this would be ADDED sugar. Other ingredients to watch out for are corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and stuff like that...

That's what they mean by ADDED sugar. The sugar isn't in there naturally, they ADD it when they make it.

      Hope this helps.

Wow,. I just checked my container of sour cream and it has more then just cream in it. It has milk, corn starch and some weird stuff. I did not realize there was such a difference. Even though I don't eat much (a couple tablespoons once or twice a week) and it hasn't seemed to effect my weight lost. I'm going to go get the daisy brand instead.

Is that the same with sausage?hot dogs?or salad dressing?I cant find any dressing acceptable for atkins at the store.
my mother in law brought a can of macadamia nuts to me and the had 1 g carbs sugar. Whats that about?

I imagine the macadamias have 1 gram of natural sugar unless they have been honey-roasted. the ingredients list will say if they have added sugar or corn syrup etc.

As for the hotdogs and sausages they might well have some sort of binder or filler that contains carbs - you will need to check the list of ingredients to make sure all of them are allowed.

Salad dressings typically contain sugar too unless homemade, and again you need to check the list to see if sugar or HFCS, dextrose or other sugar has been added.

Atkins certainly turns us all into label readers!!

Yep , Daisy brand sour cream is my type of sour cream here in virginia.
Once or twice a week, I love some pork rinds with sour cream.
I make it spicy with a lot of cayenne pepper.
