  • Weight loss in first week?

Hi, I'm new to the boards and have a question. I did Atkins a few years back and was very sucessfull in my induction. I completed my first week of induction yesterday and lost 4.5 lbs. Is this a normal amount? I felt like I should have lost more. I think I did make one error, I drank beer (low carb 3.5 grams) I made sure I stayed under my 20 grams though. Do you think this is what slowed me? I will not be drinking it again because I don't want to chance it.
    Thanks

There are so many factors that can affect your loss. How much you have to lose, your metabolism, the amount of water you are carrying as well as the amount you drink, your age, your exercise level. I'd say that 4.5 is pretty respectable. Did you drink half your weight in ounces of water daily? Did you take some exercise?

From what I ahve learned from the "Experts" here on the board is that you can expect to lose 10% of what you need to lose int he first two weeks ......... so if you have 80 lbs to lose look for about 8 in the first two weeks ......... I don't know your stats but it sounds like you are doing great at 4.5 in one week!

Thank you so much, ladies. I have about 50 to loose (I may go for an extra 5-10 when I get there) I didn't drink enough water at all and I did minimal excercise. I think my two big mistakes were the beer and diet soda. I'm cutting both out now and sticking to tuns of water. Thanks a million for making me feel better about the 4.5

For me its more important that Atkins reduces my hunger.
If I am less hungry , I know in the long term I am going to have control over what I eat and I will lose weight from it.
I have tried low fat diets and I was hungry all time and subsequently went off.
Now that I have built a lot momentum in my atkins travel, turning food down is easy, because I am less hungry on atkins.

I am telling you this because in the long run it won't make any difference how much weight lose or gain the first few weeks. Look at this as a life changing way of life.
            It works for me.

I lost 2 lbs on the 2 weeks of induction and my goal was a 33 lb weight loss, so I lost about 6% of my goal. We all lose weight at different rates!

Re: Weight loss in first week?

Thanks for all the replies. I AM less hungry but I can't help but to feel discouraged that the scale isn't moving. I will continue on and in no way want to quit but I am a little down about it. I had big hopes for a significant loss these first two weeks and I feel like I'm failing or doing something wrong. I've went over and over it though and I'm not eating the wrong things.

Re: Weight loss in first week?

You still have a few days till you have been 14 days on induction, so may see some more loss before then
When you look at the chart in DANDR after 14 days to discover what sort of resistance to weightloss you have you can decide whether you are one of the few people who Dr Atkins said might benefit from a longer induction or if you shoudl start climbing the OWL carbohydrate ladder.

Till then just keep up the good work!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
